Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

does anyone know what tree this is?

November 4th 2008 02:27
I was walking to work this morning as I always do, I love this time of year because the Jacaranda are so so beautiful. While I was gazing at my favourite Jacaranda in Victoria Park day dreaming I looked to my right and saw this amazing bright red tree, it is truly beautiful and I honestly can't beleive I have never noticed it before. I was obviously blinded by my love of Jaranda.

I was wondering if any Orblers out there know what the tree is called.

Yes I know it is slightly off topic for my blog but hey its a tree and its red, that's like, linked to the environment and the right colour

Here are my slightly blurry phone pics.

Cheers

Louie

What type of tree is this?

A close up of the flowers.

Louie - no idea... but I'm also amazed at some of the vibrant colours in the Australian foliage...

Does anyone else know what this tree is?

Thanks Cib, i am sure someone out there will know.

I was thinking maybe its a flame tree? I've always wondered if they actually exist or are just part of a song.

Hmmm...could that be a Japanese Maple tree? If I understand it right, the leaves of Maple Trees change color seasonally. And it is not always the same color. Maybe, that was the reason you didn't notice that tree before. But then, it could be another tree that I don't know anything about

Hi Louie,

It's a Brachychiton Acerifolius or Flame Tree. They're pretty aren't they!

Yes, I thought it was a flame tree but I did not know the Latin for it.

And you're right, it's a tree, enough said.

Hi Louie,

The tree is a Flame Tree (Botanical Name) and Latin Brachychiton Acerifolius. It’s also known as the Illawarra Flame Tree.

I rang Jimmy Barnes, and he confirmed it's definitely a flame tree. It's the exact one Don Walker saw when he wrote the song, Flame Trees. Steve Prestwich said his drumsticks were made of that very flame tree.

Which translates to: I wouldn't have had a clue, and if someone says it's a flame tree. I believe them.

I was also going to say Japanese Maple and had to look it up and seeing as though everyone came to fast rescue - here is more info on the Flame Tree:

The Illawarra Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius), is a large tree native to subtropical regions on the east coast of Australia. It is famous for the bright red bell-shaped flowers that often cover the whole tree when it is leafless. Along with other members of the Brachychiton genus, it is commonly referred to as a Kurrajong.

This tree is tolerant of temperate climates and is now cultivated world-over for its beauty. However, the maximum height of 40 m is reached only in the original, warmer, habitat. Similarly to its Kurrajong relatives the leaves are variable, with up to 7 deep lobes. It is deciduous - shedding its leaves after the dry season. The spectacular flowering occurs in late spring and new foliage is ready for the summer rains. In areas where the winter is not particularly dry, this natural rhythm may become somewhat erratic and the tree may flower only partially.

Flowers are scarlet bells with 5 partially fused petals. The pod-like fruits (technically known as follicles) are dark brown, wide, boat-shaped and about 10 cm long. They contain masses of thin bristles that stick in the skin, as well as yellow seeds. These are nutritious and were eaten by Aborigines after toasting.

I have to say I'm pretty naive when it comes to the names of trees, generally. I like the flame tree name and I think I'll stick to that because I won't be able to pronounce the latin version.

And I've learned something new today.

It's a gorgeous tree. Extremely similar in colour to a Japanese maple (one of my favourite tree's). Flame tree is a very apt name for it

Hello Louie gurrlish!

I was going to be totally facetious and subtly cynical by remarking, "it's a 'flaming tree" , ergo, an over the top 'gay' tree...oh well, missed my chance for double entendre, guess I should have been plugged into Orble 24 hours a day so I didn't miss anything... oh that's right, I was for ages but... it ended up not being worth the trouble!! opps!

Now that was rather catty of me, about the general Orble experience, not you in particular Louie, of course, GODDESS GURRLISH!!

I see someone here has taken up the GM good fight! (In list opposite)

Thank god someone is, as I keep talking blue in the face to the public at large who just stare back blankly...morons...then again, maybe they have already eaten too much GM... it does shrink the organs the European scientists say! Oh, and yes, there is one organ I possess that does NOT need any more shrinking, thank you very much!!!

cheers

hi Morganish,
yes, I'm baaack... maybe... not sure... huff...
tanx for the hello, which if its syllables are broken up is, HELL...OH!

Wonder if this was not a mistake, but a terrible and subversive plot by masked nameless men in large silk robes and pointy caps who meet nude in moonlight once a blood moon to plot out the destruction of all things equitable, honourable and democratic...

sorry, still carried away with glee about Obama winning and greatful that the Great (Dumb) Beast and his cronies of "evil doers" have been tossed off...no... I mean tossed out of the white House... tee hee...

as you can see, I have maintained my love of mental diarrhoea...and perverse humour...oh well.

cheers
