Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

the hollow men

February 16th 2009 23:30
There is a great show on the ABC called the hollow men. Not being an avid follower of politics I assumed incorrectly this show was a fictional comedy.

Little did I know it is actually the way things work. Apologies in advance for making light of a very serious issue, however if I don't laugh I will cry.

I don't know how many people observed last week but in the heat of fires, recovery packages, midnight cabinet meetings and the like Wayne Swan betrayed the Australian voters and didn't even have the balls to do it on a slow news day.

Wayne Swan called a parliamentary enquiry into "the choice of emissions trading as the central policy to reduce Australia's carbon pollution".

Now correct me if I am wrong but wasn't this very same Emissions Trading scheme a central pillar of their election campaign. Now I don't know the history of why Wayne Swan did this, hopefully a fellow blogger will tell me he was forced to do it as a concession to get the recovery package through or something along those lines.

If not, this is a digusting turnaround, Kevin Rudd denies they are backing down on their promises. He is saying it is a way to showcase their choice and they are committed to the timeline. do they think we are stupid?

As a casual outside observer, it doesn't take much to work out this enquiry undermines and potentailly delays the system we voted them in to produce.

Let's hope I am wrong and have misinterpreted the whole thing but as my collegue says it sure as hell feels like the little hollow men in the back room are lubricating an exit for the Government to go back on this crucial election promise. Do we really need to submit to a Parliamentary enquiry to have our voices heard when we voiced our opinion by voting for it in the first place?

It is seriously like a bad episode out of the hollow men. If its what is smells like, the history Kevin Rudd so desperately tries to manufacture won't treat this kindly me thinks.

cheers

Louie

Interesting stuff Louie. I watched a little of Q & A on ABC tonight and Wayne Swan was just talking about the stimulus package. No mention of environment. Economic down turn is quite the distraction.

Love & stuff
