the nuclear war of words

January 10th 2008 01:18
I don't think it will come as a surprise to the cynics out there that the UK is about to approve the building of the first new Nuclear plant since about 1995.

Just because Nuclear power stations produce less "carbon emissions" is it all of a sudden ok to go Nuclear for the sake of "Global Warming" ????..... I am the first one to say the world needs to lower Carbon emissions, but do they really think that because we have accepted Global Warming we are going to accept that there are no dangers associated with building more and more Nuclear power stations?

I am not entriely capable of presenting both arguments so ere are two links: one to a PRO Nuclear article CLICK HERE and one to the Greenpeace Website (they are obviously anti nuclear)CLICK HERE

There are some serious flaws in the logic of the pro-nuclear argument, for example they argue that Nuclear power stations produce smaller volumes of waste. OK we can't deny there is less volume of waste from a nuclear power plant than some other sources of power but how about the quality v quantity perspective people......a tea cup of Nuclear waste can do a hell of a lot more damage than the by-product of, well, just about anything really, we only need to remember Chernobyll to know that.

Read the arguments for yourself, this certainly won't be my last post on this issue: I feel the nuclear war of worlds is about to heat up.

Just because we have accepted Global Warming doesn't mean we have to accept a solution that creates even more problems. .....We made that mistake with Cane Toads

Good, thought provoking piece. I must admit that I am really on the fence. I'm not totally sold to "Go Nuke" but, I'll admit that we have to do something. I always wonder if we've really tapped solar and wind power.

Hey there James, I think we have barely even scratched the surface of what we can do with renewable energy, the solar thermal techs being developed at the moment whose yields are equal to those of Nuclear without the potential social risks.

Thanks for your comments.

I must say, I'm not strongly pro or anti nuclear. But I'm anti enough to think that just racing off and opening nuclear power stations to halt global warming isn't the solution.

Cane toads is an apt comparison!!!

I'm for lowering carbon footprints, but not quite buying it when it comes to a high potential for mass destruction on the side...

I'm sure there are more *peaceful* solutions...?

As you mentioned, there's always the Nuclear accident which "simply can't happen" and as with so many things, happens for more often than anyone bargained for, I guess it's OK for anyone not directly involved but I just think of the innocent victims, stuck with their plight.

Louie,

I am so against this move.

To me it is like the story of the Titanic, which could never sink and I have to agree with Katyzzz here... the accident that wont happen...

Besides, we don't need it, there is so much free energy available, but it is not about to sustain governments or big business, whereas tried old traditional mining has proven that it will keep the rich in control and the poor, brainwashed ... or that's the reasoning... but reason shows clearly that this isn't true... but the pleas of 'we the people' once again fall on deaf ears...

There is something in the American Declaration of Independance that speaks out boldly about the rights of the people to throw off abusive governments ... and I sincerely hope ours has more sense and brave new alternatives ..

It is terribly sad news whichever way I try to look at being cheerful and optimistic about it.. to me it is like giving a three-year-old a hand grenade.

Lilla ...

Maybe if they could use the cane toads to generate nuclear power I'd go along with it!

I'm not against the construction of nuclear plants, though I don't think it's an ideal solution.

If it comes down to using more coal or going nuclear, I think nuclear is the better option, though it bothers me that both systems produce energy by creating steam.

It'd be fantastic to get solar to the scale where it'd be feasible, but it's still a long ways away. And wind, though it sounds good, is bringing up all kinds of problems...
