To Nuke or not to Nuke...that is the Question
August 29th 2007 02:01
By now we are all well versed on Global Warming, Climate Change, Green Energy and the rest. We are all doing our best to reduce Global Warming in our own small way by reducing our own individual Carbon Footprints. If you look at this Climate Change campaign from a "marketing" perspective it has probably been one of the most successful Global marketing campaigns in the history of the World, all for a good cause. Let's hope so. Hopefully we are all not being set up to accept a lower standard than previously under the guise of "Global Warming".
Some serious questions are now going to be asked of us, an article I read this morning claimed 86% of Australians think that Climate Change is an important issue for the upcoming Federal election. CLICK HERE Apparently a LOT of us care about what is going on.
Well people we better know what we think about Nuclear power because the wheels are in motion for it to be put forward as the answer to all our Global Warming Problems. On paper nuclear seems like the perfect solution, if you ignore the risks of course. This article in the Times states that despite Environmentalists objections Britain is going to receive two new nuclear power plants and most Britains think (yes 86% again) tink its ok because its a solution to climate Change....hmmmmmmmmCLiCK HERE Scary to think of the risks if we try to solve this entire problem with Nuclear Power.
The Greenpeace Website is a good place to start if you want to get the lowdown on Nuclear Power, here is a snippet
CLICK HERE to check out everything Greenpeace has to say on Nuclear Energy
In my opinion it seems the risks and costs far outweigh the benefits of Nuclear power, something tells me we are all being set up to believe it is the answer to all of this but it isn't. Better to be informed instead of being TOLD half truths. I for one will be saying NO to Nuke.

Nuclear power is still as radioactive, dangerous and expensive as ever. And it is no solution to climate change.
Our best solution to climate change is clean renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, combined with technologies that vastly improve energy efficiency.
To solve the climate crisis, Greenpeace is calling for a target of 60 per cent renewable energy in Australia by 2050.
Read our submission to the federal government's nuclear inquiry.

It is big, spectacular and powerful but also a danger.
The government report lead by Ziggy should be looked at through his trck record.
Yes he has qualifications but he has been in business for more than 20 years.
He was labeled one sock Ziggy after one of his publicity stunts
As Ceo of Kodak Australia he closed the operation down and sent it contractors in Asia.
As Ceo of Telstra he shut down existing chains of communication from lower ranks to senior management. He has a I don't want to know about the problems attitude.
He also seems to be more interested in the share movement than in running companies.
As such I would look at his report in a very dubious and questionable light.

NO NUKES
We really don't need them, but it's the uranium (mining) profits that make it a 'bottom line' spinner... just keep on raping the planet...the saddest part of all, is I don't think we have a say, really... you and Lara are right - Cheap and Dirty!!!
Did you know Japan has 27 Nuclear plants that have been running 'cleanly' for years... I wonder where they are dumping their garbage?
It just breaks my heart to see all that sun and wind go to waste, year after year, after year, just so a few greasy corporate slime-balls, with politicians in their back pockets, can make a few more 'bottom lines' ...oops, sorry, better stop now before the soap box comes out, but I have come to realise that when a politician is chattering about 'sustainable' this and that, he is talking about his income, not the planet.
I noticed with great dissapointment too, that in order to be a part of the 'great game,' the Austrlian Labor party had to drop it's 'No Nukes' philosophy, for the first time in history... we've already been sold out then, either way, it's a done deal? Not that I don't think Mr Garrett will eventually make a sound, as the front man does...but he won't stop this one... not from where I am standing?
And when it's all been mined out, every last thing... then what?

want my opinion?
Screw nuclear power...All we yanks have ever had out of it is trouble, death and poisoning...
And if ya don't believe it, look up Three Mile Island Pennsylvania, and see what happened there...
But I really only have one word to say here...Chernoybal...The entire world is still paying for that little mistake!
Never mind that one infintesimal granule of spent reactor fuel has a half life of 75 million years!
Take care,
Nick

With the new HTGR reactors (high temp gas reactor), not only will we have 100% passively-achieved safety, but other benefits. The HTGRs are hot enough to catalytically break down H2O (water) into hydrogen, or process it to hydrogen fuels. That means clean car and transportation fuels. Now then there are MAGLEV trains, no wheels, soon to be on the Eurasian Landbridge and the Bering St. tunnel from USA to Russia. If you war mongers and anti-nukers (really the same thing, dig, Iran as target) cut out your I love Dick Cheney and the Queen crap.

I think it's much preferable to the massive coal plants that Australia currently uses.
Obviously, the best solution is to use some kind of solar power, but at the moment, it's not quite a mature technology, and can't deliver the kind of power that the country needs.
Individuals can reduce their power consumption by installing their own, and I think that's a good way to start... but I don't see many households doing that...

Major Catch22 but the new solar Technologies are proving to be as effecting as Nuke, Solar Thermal it si called, unfortunately the VC's pretty much own it so will want to make their gazillion percent treturns before parting with the Tech.
cheers, thanks for your comments.
