Another Carbon Offset Warning
August 15th 2007 04:01
Carbon offsetting is getting "cooler" but as has been discussed here previously one of the biggest concerns about available Carbon Credits is the Quality of the Credits you are buying, this weeks Economist (my finance bible) has an excellent article on the different Voluntary Carbon offset systems. The story wades through the quagmire of different systems out there pretty efficiently. This will be a big help those who want to buy Carbon Credits or for those who just want to understand more about the Credits themselves.

I would still buy any Offset with caution, the most important thing to ask is whether the Offset is retired or if the person you are buying them from is simply taking your money and re-selling the un-retired credit to someone else. The Economist Article points out a whole new layer of potential for us to get ripped off: That is the Quality of the Register the Credit is lodged with and retired from.......
I am still of the opinion that for the long term we are all better off INVESTING our cash into well chosen listed vehicles that provide Carbon Reduction solutions in perpetuity, I have written a few pieces on it, see spotlight posts and am still doing a lot of work on it so there will be more posts to follow.
cheers
Happy offsetting

I'd like to arrange some credit really,
Just to fill my car up.
I want some bottled water.
I'm really just too hot.
It's that wretched global warming.
Although I believe it's not.
So that's why I want some credit please
So don't put me in a spot.
I love those furry animals
Sitting on the Ice.
No, not me, it's them silly,
It's sinking I am not.
I want to spend up bigtime
Before putting out the lights,
That's why I want some credit now.
I want to spend the LOT.

I always learn new things on your blog!!! I have heard of carbon credits, but didn't really understand it. But that article was pretty good.
Can't say I know enough to have an opinion yet, but your comment about investing in established vehicles that offer carbon reduction solutions sounds sensible.

I agree, buying a car that pollutes less and offsetting the crap you throw into the atmosphere is a brilliant idea...
Have to admit I'd heard of Carbon Credits, but has no idea what it meant..
Good read!
Take care,
Nick
