Emissions Trading – Howard says Trust me….Again
June 4th 2007 08:02
I am sure you have all read the press that the long awaited Government stance on Emissions targets is finally here, well it is getting drip fed…... Amidst a quality slanging match. What did we actually get? And is it good enough?
If you believe Howard the Labor policy is going to drag us into the “Garrett recession Australia doesn’t need to have” and if you believe Labor then the Howard stance is inadequate because it hasn’t set a target for Emissions reduction.
What did we get from him? well you have to read between a lot of lines to actually decipher what the Government is trying to say. Basically what we have is a promise that we will have a Carbon market by 2012 but we wont get an emissions target until after the election, for that we have to trust Johnny. We have been told that climate change is an Economic issue now, and therefore political, therefore it is more important for us to know Peter Garrett’s faults than the actual detail of our Emissions policy or to worry about the environment anymore, we are beyond that…….
The 219 page report also proposed the formulation of an independent regulator in 2009 to be followed by the setting of short-term caps on Carbon Emissions and the allocation of permits in 2010. Full scale trading would start in 2011 – with the option to delay until 2012 – I’ll take $50 bucks on that being exercised right now –
In theory all these recommendations are good and this is a positive step, it is probably not as relevant as we all think to set a firm yet as these targets will always be moving targets no matter what we are led to believe.
So folks all in all it means a very boring six months of hearing “trust me”, recession talk and Garrett bashing from Johnny and six months of this isn’t good enough from Mr Rudd.
I never intended to get involved in Politics so forgive me if I stop focusing on this aspect from now. The sad thing is this is a crucial policy decision FOR THE ENVIRONMENT and we are now getting lost in a quagmire of Political banter.
Best we all just get on with what we should be, trying to do the little things to help and be aware that our actions have implications, and watch Business take the lead on this issue and build a voluntary market that people who genuinely care can participate in. I think I am guilty of getting a little too side tracked on this issue.
Cheers
