Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

one for the climate sceptics

July 23rd 2008 02:20
It seems the Doco the sceptics love, "The Great Global Warmng Swindle" may not be all that it seems.

Phew, they were cleared of the charge of "materially misleading" but they broke strict broadcasting rules on impartiality.....

Those of you who use this doco as their main point of reference to deny Climate Change, start looking elsewhere.

HERE's a LINK

UPDATE 1- LONDON, July 21 (Reuters Life!) - A documentary by Britain's Channel 4 which claimed that man-made climate change is a fraud broke strict broadcasting rules on impartiality, the media regulator said on Monday.

Ofcom said "The Great Global Warming Swindle" was unfair to several senior scientists and should have given a wider range of views on such a controversial issue.

However, the watchdog cleared the programme's makers of the serious charge of "materially misleading" viewers and said the first four of the programme's five parts did not breach impartiality rules.

The show, written and directed by film-maker Martin Durkin, was first shown in March 2007 and has been described as a response to Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth".

What boggles me is that there are actually sceptics of climate change. Isn't the evidence all around us?

There must always be skeptics, sometimes they are actually right.

I doubt that we know everything that we should about climate change, and, for those who can't read, let alone reason, no , I am not saying I agree with the skeptics.

Keep up the good work Louie, but don't always believe everything you read and hear, generally there are half truths which complicate issues.

And I'm dead keen to protect animals, the arctic, the rainforests, what is left of them, etc etc.

I understand your point katyzzz and agree that mistruths are easily pedalled - even by the well intentioned.... but think the issue is bigger than the realm of the skeptic...
I love a balanced arguement and gleefully take the part of the 'skeptic' in discussions on the paranormal, religion, Diana conspiracies, The War on Terror or any number of much argued bbq gems.

But I do think the health of the planet is not up for debate...

I like to imagine we are in space (because we are), in a vessel designed for the preservation of our lives (because in a lot of ways that is the case) and someone comes into the mess hall saying that the hull has a crack...
Well, the nature of people dictates there's going to be folk on the ship who immediately wet themselves in fright, don an EVA suit and set about recruiting people to finding the crack 'before more cracks appear for heaven's sake!!!!!!'.
There are people too, who are not going to understand what the hell it even means to have a crack in the hull, couldn't give a crap anyway and go about happily eating their jelly fruit.
And then there are people who'll flatly deny the existence of said crack - for any number of reasons - and attempt to convince the rest of the crew of the crack's imaginary nature.
Of course there are also people who sit in the spaces between those three types.

But as with all cracks in spaceships - in poorly constructed metaphores - if we ignore it, it's going to get bigger and we will start to vent atmosphere and all die a horrible death.
If we dedicate resources to finding the crack, as well as the cause of cracks generally and set about eliminating them both... well the only loss we incurred is our 'effort', but the gain is that we have identified new ways of doing things and potentially saved the whole ship.

In this case, the skeptic's a dangerous influence because, every person they recruit is a person who won't be doing their bit.

We can't afford to act as - or even heed - the 'skeptic' when the whole ship is at stake. We need to make sure the ship is here, for the next generation - so our children can be free to sit in ignorance and gobble jelly fruit.

Now that i've made my 'geekishness' plainly obvious, i'll sign off!!

Kim, the problem is the degree of things by which it is caused and the methods used to correct it, thereby lies the value of a skeptical view.

Most would agree it exists but I am not sure that we are doing enough and the right things to correct it, and to what degree some of it is out of our control.

There are no absolutes for right and wrong and far be it for us not to allow a skeptics point of view.

I have absolutely no desire to debate such issues, I just watch and wait.

Katyzzz, i agree with you that we should not swallow things whole if you like.
I actually started looking into this topic as a bit of a skeptic and was genuinely surprised by the substance I found. Regardless of Climate Change, what I discovered was the world needs to clean up its act no matter what label you put on it.

I am a Doubting Thomas myself, if nothing else, but KimL has a very solid reasoning there and Katyzzz has a very good point too. But then, you know my position on this.

Climate change is one thing, and I guess it's practical and healthy to keep an open mind and keep your ideas evolving - but as for how it's all represented in the media and by interested parties... well, I'm not surprised.

Hope you're having a great week, Louie!

Hi Louie,

Mr M and I were discussing this doco just the other night. Neither of us have seen it so now I"m glad I didn't waste my time.

But someone I know did watch it, and thought it was gospel. After many hours arguing I finally managed to get this person to agree that pumping crap into the air would have some affect...even if it is just a little one. And we have nothing to lose by trying to change our ways.

It is satisfying to know that this doco is crap.

Love & stuff

Mrs M, Yes it is satisfying and good to know you were able to convince someone with common sense.
