Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

From the horses mouth.

December 24th 2007 06:24
I know i am preaching to the converted but it doesn't hurt to remind ourselves during this time of excess that we really do need to continue slowing down the old consumption malfunction.........Here is a scary piece from the New York Times. An Editor asked four reporters to talk about Climate Change effects in their own backyards.

Very compelling and quite disturbing. Of course everytihng does go in cycles, weather being no exception but still...............

I wanted to publish this more to remind everyone to follow Lilla's tips on consuming less this Christmas more than anything.

Merry Christmas Orblers.
Louie

I could make up the same story about New York being colder:

--- This year, the freeze came a week after Thanksgiving. I said to my wife, " I don't understand why it is so cold. When I was a boy it used to be 60 (F) till almost Christmas. And snow in the beginning of December! How awful."
"Yes", she answered, "and I fear what will happen this winter in Guatemala (where she comes from). Last winter there was snow in not only the mountains but in the Highlands near my parent's home. It is the great global cooling we have heard about."
"Yes" I agreed, "it would stop if people stopped burning cow manure and built nuclear energy plants, but they are too busy being dumb greenies."
"I guess we will all freeze" she sighed.

Louie, don't you get it, they don't give a sh@@t. It's simple brainwashing for genocide and suicide.

Hi Louie,

slowing down the old consumption malfunction.

Just thought I'd add the emphasis *laughs* as Howard says, if it's going to be brainwashing, then lets get it started in the right direction, hey?

In a way, Howard is right I guess *sigh* but that doesn't mean we should run like lemmings to the cliff face, does it?

And you have to ask yourself if the lemmings would run at all, if they actually knew it meant their death?

Which means in essense, that by the laws of reason to do so, (consume with augusto despite dwindling supplies and increased population), ... makes us more stoopid than lemnings (because we do know)?

I'd better stop there. *laugs* the stories are chilling indeed Louie, and the truth is still the truth, although some may have trouble believing it... but that's probably what got us into this mess in the first place, isn't it?

Great post Louie, thanks for the plug.

Howard,

On the issue of cooling and warming and your sometimes 'out of context' views...(something I wrote previously to JJ on Media Watch).

'...Slightly off topic, but I think the only misunderstanding about 'Global Warming' here, is to scoff at the situation the world is in environmentally.

Global warming today doesn't stand for a massive rise or fall alone, but stands for many other things, including dying birds(happening now as a consequence of temperatures?), dying fish, dying people (see China and India), dying bees abd sickening crops; and ... floating garbage in the pacific now engulfing Hawaii and so on and so on ... basically all pointing to us choking on our own consumer excrement.

Splitting hairs over half a degree and Al Gore's income portfolio is immaterial in the grand scheme of things, here... and I agree that iit is wise to remember that scientists are hired by all sorts of people with all sorts of agenda's, to say all sorts of things too.

However, global cooling is as trecherous to the balance as warming, and I thought I read somehwere that warming is often evidenced (and balanced by the planet) with extreme cooling in equal and opposite ends of the globe?

It is a very delicately balanced system, after all.

ONLY a 6 Degree drop, was enough to trigger the last ice age (1,000 year ago one)... and I notice on the charts, that temperatures rose dramatically just before that plunge and the tropics even got wetter (and living in them, I can attest to that!) .... Anyway, to quote science .. and history.

When the Earth is in its "Ice House" climate mode, there is ice at the poles. The polar ice sheet expands and contracts because of variations in the Earth's orbit (Milankovitch cycles). The last expansion of the polar ice sheets took place about 18,000 years ago.

I think today's generic term 'Global Warming,' does indeed include all swings in climate from both extremes ... and that is the point ... as it swings further out, each side, each year - as you have also documented in the cold extremes which have come on the tail of previous heat waves - drought and bush fire seasons unrivaled in Australian history too ... So, warmer, or cooler is again, immaterial as the planet uses this swinging mechanism to compensate whilst in 'Ice House' mode. Perhaps they should say Global Swinging and can we survive the "swings" as they become wider?

And what happens when the poles have all melted, as they are doing as we type away with our heads in the sand?

You can click this link to watch the world temperature yourself and see where a year takes it?

I have been watching for eight months now, and I can assure you the median earth temperature is on the rise ... no doubts in believing my eyes here ...real time.'

The point Lila is that we are humans not orangutans or birds, etc. We can solve problems. We can bring water hundreds of miles and divert rivers. We can build dams and dikes. We can live in the Alaskan Arctic or Siberia with adequate energy supplies. Anyway, oil will begin to run out soon, so we need some good alternative energy, like fission and nuclear fusion power.

And the point about the money people (like Al Gore) is that the super-rich will still go on airplane flights in a New Dark Age, they just pay a "carbon tax" indulgence for their sins.

Don't believe it. Grow up.

Howard,

..as always, I have to agree in part with you. Humans are the most adaptable species known... and after the 'shift' in status quo (probably through a balancing act of nature) ... when millions are dead, we will adapt and rebuild ... no doubts...well providing there is food growing and animals left to hunt, oh and clean water to drink.

In the meantime we flood the cities en masse (see my latest post) and tip the scales even further, making us no more than baboons or lemmings whilst in search of the mighty profit on our shares, debntures and investments.

Not very smart move from such a smart species if you ask me... and as for nuclear fusion?

Well I'm sorry, but to my way of thinking, you can't be sane or smart to want to take that step over solar, wind and thermal emergy first ... especially when the cost of setting it up is not cheaper.

No, so far, not such a smart species at all.

Lilla.. you are dead right in your synopsis of "Global Warming" above, it does stand for so much more, no-one can argue that we havent damaged this beautiful planet.. sorry I have not been on the computer a lot lst coupla weeks...

Hey Louie,

Thank you, it is nice to see you ... and I am glad you can also see my point about arguing over the terminology ... other's can't ...as you can see, Howard and I have been keeping the 'warmth' going in your absence...

Look, we have to RAISE the potential population density of the planet. That means working with China, India, African countries, etc to make that happen.
Indiscriminate environmental fears like "Global Warming", "Carbon Counts" and "No Nukes" are having the opposite effect. They are creating a forcing effect to kill billions of people. Oil will start to run out within a 100 years. It is already too expensive. We need new and LARGE sources of energy, for real.

The entire nation of Nigeria, with over 100 million people has the electricity equivalent of two large nuclear power plants!!! This is a crime. Why can't they have 10 or 20 plants at least. The system financially and otherwise is rigged against them. This is evil.

If we have power and water control, we can green desert, we can rebuild forests and habitats where necessary. The world needs more people!!!!!!!!! See my other blog, Really Long Link
