Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

Has Peter Garrett really sold out?

November 8th 2007 22:47
OK. So I am struggling to write a post that doesn't touch on the election. I read a story this morning that said Peter Garrett has sold out. It got me thinking, has he really?

If I think back; for as long as I can remember Peter Garrett had been an environmentalist, and I don't think I stand alone in saying that as a young Australian he has framed many of the views and values towards the Environment that I hold close to my heart.

Does he really need to be a member of the Green Party to continue to represent these views?

I guess the centre of the issue is the fact that Labor have done an about face on their Uranium policy. Well this would have happened with or without Peter Garrett. More IMPORTANTLY let's focus on what he has achieved..... it is very obvious that Garrett has had a HUGE influence on how Kevin Rudd and the Labor party view environmental issues, this has lead to an about face by the Prime Minister and is paving the way for the environment to be a Bi-Partisan issue...this people is an incredible feat. And this can only be a viewed good thing. If he stayed in the Green Party he would have been just another Greenie ex rock star shouting in a muted voice from an obscure shdow. (And yes quite possibly viewed as a radical) From the Front Bench of Parliament he has a voice, strong and clear and guess what.... people are hearing and even better THEY ARE LISTENING. Make no mistake the very fact that he carries so much passion on this issue is a major factor contributing to the fact that record numbers of Australian's have the Environment high on their list of Political issues.

Just how this can be seen as selling out I am not sure, from where I am sitting it looks like he has bought in so he can make a difference. It's not like he would need the money, HE ACTUALLY CARES, I think we can count on the fingers of one hand throughout history how many Politicians actually have cared!!!!!! And who knows maybe he will be able to change Labor's Nuclear policy and really do some good..... Forget bad press and sledging......Labor, Liberal, Green or Blue; if you care about the environment you should be a Peter Garrett supporter.

I think it's always hard to be a pragmatist -- to do what you need to in order to get things done -- and not to be seen as selling out. Especially when you started off as such as idealist.

Major Part politics is much different than most smaller parties. There is the party line and official policy to promote.
LIberal and Labour have different ways of dealing with decent and policy making.

In the liberal party the cabinet make policy, but a decenting minister can cross the floor to disagree.

In the Labour Party a full caucus makes policy but the decenting minister must resign before he crosses the floor.

Factions work in the back ground in both parties creating power struggles to force policy through.

Garret just happens to understand the reality of the party that he has opted to join. As he has said he speak freely in caucus but accept the final decision of the vote.

Hard to say until the election is over.

They all tend to say whatever they need to, to get in.

It's what they do afterwards that's important.

I don't like Politics much, they all seem to leave something to be desired.

hmmm tough question here. i cannot reconcile the fact that peter garrett is now a labor politician because i can't seem to make any real distinctions between the two parties.

however, i am quite militant in my views so my vision is probably blinkered somewhat. also, i am still young and can maintain the rage right now, perhaps.

The Aus CEC and me are going for the LIBs as No 2 vote. Being fascist is bad, but being totally genocidal suicidal brainwashed greenies for "Manmade Global Warming" like the ALP these days is another.
