Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

to pact or not to pact?

April 8th 2008 00:00
As part of his European tour, Kevin Rudd has agreed to be part of an Emissions Trading pact between the UK and some European heavy weights. This is great for our image, and shows we have commttment to Climate Change solutions. However, we do need to remember that we are only circa 1.5% of global emmissions and as much as we want to be part of the solution, exposing our trading system to the bigger systems too early, will do more harm than good in the immediate future. Those that follow markets will know just how easy it is for markets to be marginalised if they are irrelevant and Australia does not want to do that. Australia needs to make itself relevant.

It seems like Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong are on the page, they are flying to China today. Our best bet for maintaining global relevance and the integrity of our trading system, is to be the solution for Asia; to assist Asian developing countries by providing technology and financing for their greenhouse reduction projects -that is a pact that will truly make a difference - Incidentally the by- product of this will be a burgeoning industry here, this new industry will more than offset any costs associated with iplementing our own emmissions trading system.

Here is what Penny Wong says the objectives for heself and Kevin Rudd are

"The key focus of this is to ensure that we have a clear understanding of China's views, to ensure we have a close engagement with them, because we understand that international negotiations require a response from all the nation's of the world, and China is a key nation in those negotiations," she said.
