Are we past the tipping point?
October 10th 2007 01:16
Tim Flannery, Australia's leading Climate Change Scientist says that the UN report on Climate Change due out next month will show that we are past the tipping point, and it seems we have been beyond it for some time.
It's pretty scary if we are beyond the tipping point, and makes the UN post Kyoto Negotiations in Nov/December even more crucial.

The UN climate change report to be released next month will show that greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have already reached dangerous levels, Australia's pre-eminent conservationist said on Tuesday.
Scientist and Australian of the Year Tim Flannery said the report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change showed that the previous research had underestimated the danger and that the tipping point on climate change had passed in 2005.
''We thought we'd be at that threshold within about a decade,'' Prof Flannery told ABC. ''We thought we had that much time, but the new data indicates that in about mid-2005, we crossed that threshold.''
Flannery said that growing economies meant growing greenhouse gas emissions and that meant a growing threat of global warming.
''We've had growing economies everywhere. We're still basing that economic activity on fossil fuels. You know, the metabolism of that economy is now on a collision course, clearly, with the metabolism of our planet,'' said Flannery.

I know we can't but sometimes it just seems too hard.
I heard this morning that it looks like Australia is on the verge of signing the Kyoto Protocol and that just might push the USA to sign too. Here's hoping.
Love & stuff

i honestly believe whoever wins the election we will sign the new version of Kyoto because the UN is evolving the Kyoto treaty and we won't have a dam leg to stand on if we don't.
As for giving up, its very discouraging to see that despite Kyoto we are going backwards (imagine if we didnt have it) the main problem is America, so hopefully as you say if we sign they may follow, mind you if there wasnt an election this year people would see australia really doesnt effect things that much,...both parties are trying to make us seem more relevant in the Global sphere than what we are for their own political gain which makes me angry but thats another whole issue.......but I try not to care about that, whatever makes people aware is good as far as I am concerned.... every little bit helps.....

it means that we will leap from Global Warming to Global Boiling and that all the drama queens might end up being right.....some of the bad things that are happening are beyond ordinary cycles of nature and are the direct effect of Global Warming,,,,,i.e. we are paying for our irresponsibility already.....and it means China, India and America need to get their asses into gear and find a way for the New Version for Kyoto to work....unfortunately Australia is largely irrelevant despite all the politics and posturing no-one really gives two tosses about us because we are a tiny percentage of Emissions, China is the largest, US second....
cheers
