20,000 cars....is it really so bad?
December 6th 2007 22:38
There is a ot of negative press floating around about the number of people going to Bali this week and how many emissions are being created in order to negotiate the new version of Kyoto.
Some of the figures range from 10 -15,000 delegates from various countries and vested interests - lobbyists, entrepreneurs, junkett seekers etc etc . Apparently they will emit the equivalent of what about 20,000 cars do in a year - not a small amount of Emissions for their sins!!
At first i was pretty outraged at this ; then my opinion changed somewhat......the good that could come out of this far dwarfs the resources invested in the process.
Imagine if we can get the world to agree on this issue...when would that have ever happened before? Global consensus on an issue....how many MILLIONS of tonnes of Carbon will be saved by these talks, the answer in many many millions....so yes it looks bad on paper and it's a good edge for a story to bag the participants but if we can reach an agreement the benefits far outweigh the costs. How many wars have there been over Oil?
The question is can we do it? As we know the key lies in China and India and they have been making some positive noises lately.
Here's hoping people!!!!!
More on this very shortly
cheers
