Bali Outcome, not perfect but pretty dam good
December 17th 2007 00:31
Penny Wong did us proud over the weekend, playing an integral part in the Bali Negotiations, the outcome of which is a roadmap to lead into the final conference and new agreement scheduled to be signed at the end of 2009.
Even the US capitulated a little thanks to Wong's persistence.
Below is an extract of an email I received from a conference goer, he touts the agreement as a breqkthrough.
So what did we actually get out of Bali? The world agreed on non-binding (at this stage) cuts of between 25% - 40% till 2020 from 2000 levels. The negotiations over the next two years will be hard but the signing of the roadmap shows even the hard-liners recognise the need for an outcome. Developing nations conceded to be bound by "emission limitations and reduction objectives" and they also agreed to " measurable, reportable and verifyable nationally appropriate mitigations commitments or actions" not great but not bad either. It will be a bumpy negotiation over the next two years but hey, its a beginning and when has the world ever agreed on anything.
The overall scroecard of the event 52,000 tonnes of emissions produced for how many removed?....well that remains to be seen but at least 1000 times that, if not more. So, A LOT, it may not be a 100% success but it is a very good start.
cheers

The Bali conference has ended on a high note, with agreement on a Bali roadmap after lengthy and at times difficult negotiations. During the closing plenary, many parties expressed their pleasure at the adoption of the Bali roadmap, and thanked their colleagues, the UNFCCC Secretariat and the Indonesian Government. Pakistan, for the G-77/China, highlighted the shared understanding that our partners “will not leave us again” and that “we are taking this step together.” Portugal, for the EU, noted that a busy two years lies ahead, and committed itself to working towards a final agreement in Copenhagen. Closing the meeting, President Witoelar said the decisions in Bali have launched a new process for reaching agreement by 2009. He labeled the meeting as a “breakthrough” where delegates demonstrated leadership to create a sustainable future, and identified the Bali roadmap as a tribute to delegates' solidarity to tackling climate change, the “defining challenge of the century.” He gaveled the meeting to a close at 6:27pm.

Flashes of memories
Very good news indeed. At least there are some good signs as to welcome changes for the future. People seem to be wising up to the need for us to protect our environment at last.
