Al Gore - Tall Poppy or Hypocrite?

June 20th 2008 00:22
wow, I get to quote Perez Hilton as a source twice in as many weeks, Climate Change must be getting cool or something.

today Perez Hilton is reporting CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY on the story that Al Gore is being called a hypocrite because his power consumption in his home increased by 10% last year according to the local energy agency CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAIL - love Perez for doing all the work

Al Gores response to all this has been to outline all the improvements he has made to his home to make it Greener. Ill have to say, the steps he has take are impressive in anybodies language, he even has Geothermal power, Ive never heard of that in a residence before, not to mention, wind power and solar panels, plus they sign up for Green Power. So if he is all green does it matter If his power consumption has gone up? (and couldn't it be because of the building works anyhows?)

I have been known to be outraged by how much money he has made out of Global warming but he has since earnt my respect because of his tireless campaigning and substantial donations to the cause.

They are calling him a hypocrite but I can't help but think he is merely a tall Poppy.

What do you think?

Louie,

very interesting, but, as we do not have all the facts regarding his power generation and usage and how that balances against what he draws off the grid, if anything, and if that grid power supplied by nuclear power, then the global warming aspect does not apply, but other problems...and we know what they are..

There is a possibility of poppy syndrome, but, it is also an election year, so maybe it is Republican subversive attacks, so Gore cannot easily slip into the presidential debate..?? maybe??

I don't know, as I have said before, I think that the sun's output is increasing, the pole reversals and whatnot, are largely to blame for the climate changes, and much worse to come, if the theories surrounding all that are true!

However, we cannot avoid the damage we have done, and what annoys me is, no government seems worried about the level of mercury in fish, and DDT etc in the water tables... just no one bothers about that, because it is harder to fix probably, since we add to the problem massively every single day!

cheers

P.S. Gore should have credited the many scientists that he drew his conclusions from, in the doco I mean, such as the English scientist who first discovered that the "conveyor belt" ocean current between England and Europe had come to an abrupt stop before bringing on a mini ice age in the northern hemisphere...mini meaning 10,000 years... only taking between two and ten years to start!

P.P.S. Looking below, I should have qualified that Gore did not make it clear who this scientist was and what his contribution to the research was, many were involved, true, but htis guy came up with the hard evidence, the little periwinkle like things in the ocean bed.

What I find amusing is that many in the anti-Gore camp are gloating that Bush's Texas ranch is more enviro-friendly that Gores.

BUT!

If global warming is a hoax, then why does Bush feel the need have a green abode and why are the "Glo-Bull Warming " crowd applauding him for it?

Doesn't make sense.

But about Gore, I do actually find it a little odd that he has only just gone green power at home. I don't know. I admire his work, but he is certainly not helping his own cause with all the money he is making out of it...

I think it's tall poppy syndrome. I have no problem with him earning bucket loads of money. everyone is entitled to earn and people are too quick to criticize. I would find him a hypocrite if he was driving around in a hummer. even if global warming turns out to be caused by actual weather phenomena and not humans, he has raised the issue of living cleaner and trying to leave less damage in our wakes and I think he should be applauded for it.

he put a lot of work into it (as did the scientists whose work he cites) and he is entitled to reap reward for his work.

Now before I stir up a controversy on what is to follow - let me say from the outset that the Greener the Better.

Unfortunately in my opinion - Al Gore's biggest problem in convincing the masses - is that his detractors have a virtual ensemble of faux pars and half truths which he himself can be credited.

While most can accept that this probably part and parcel of the politicans lot - those who choose to cite his public career point the volumes of exaggerating, distorting, and dissembling.

Such was the case when Gore claimed to have taken “the initiative in creating the Internet.” or when he was campaigning for president in 2000 and told a union group that his parents sung him to sleep with lullabies like “Look for the Union Label” – a jingle that was written for a union advertisement in 1975, when Al Gore was 27 years old!

I may be painting the wrong picture of my own beliefs - but for the sake of the debate (and who doesn't like to stir the pot a little sometimes) but perhaps the most illustrative example of Al Gore’s problem is when he stood before the entire nation during the 1996 Democratic National Convention and emotionally told of how in 1984 he held his sister’s hand as she died of lung cancer due to smoking.

With a lump in his throat, Al explained that this emotional moment caused him to “pour [his] heart and soul into the [anti-tobacco] cause.”

Problem was for the next four years after his sister’s death, Al Gore and his family continued to grow tobacco on the family farm. For the next six years, Gore maintained political relationships with the tobacco industry and accepted their large political contributions.

Tall poppy or hypocrite - I'm not sure - but as far as being the person to deliver the right message for the right reason - he is unfortunately not the best choice.

Hypocrite. Gore has invented a way for the wealthy to buy themselves out of sacrifice for the planet while the poor, who obviously don't have the money to pay, will be the ones cutting back and giving up on all carbon-emitting things to do the real grunt work of this green movement. I would also like to have heard a response from the Gore camp on the science against global warming, but I suppose that's too much to ask from someone who says the debate is over.

Gore is such a phony, how could anyone still buy into his crappola? He used faulty science, faked photographs, rehashed Global Cooling hysterics from the 1970's, opened the frist carbon credit company so he could pay himself every time he wasted energy, and there are still people crazy enough to believe anything he says.

Climate Change has been happening as long as the planet has been rotating. We didn't cause it and we can't stop it, either. We didn't cause the Ice Ages, we don't cause the ocean currents or sun spots or volcanos. They are natural things that happen. Making ourselves miserable and Gore rich isn't going to change anything.

And just FYI, Ruby, Pres. Bush's home was built before Gore invented Climate Change. It was a good idea then and it still is to use geo-thermal, solar, ect. Not because of Gore and his foolishness, but because being "good stewards of the Earth" is the right thing to do. There's a big difference between real conservation and the phony kind.

So is Bush being a "good steward of the earth" when he says he wants to drill in Alaska? One of the few remaining wilderness on left on the planet?

Hmmm. Also, global warming was around before AL got involved. The Greenhouse Effect, the ozone layer etc etc, people have been warning us about this stuff for decades. Al Gore may have popularised it, but he did not 'invent' it.

Honestly, Ruby, you should learn a little more about history. During the 1970's Al Gore was among those who were squawking about Global Cooling and how we would be under a layer of solid ice before the year 2000. Although there had been previous threats (from other crackpots) about global freezing or roasting, he was on the bandwagon when it first became a common subject. When the new Ice Age didn't arrive on his schedule, he shut up for a few years, hoping that everyone would forget, and then popped up again with Global Warming. Then changed it to Climate Change because even he knew he was lying and wanted to cover all his bases.

Concerning Pres. Bush, you obviously don't know much about his policies. There's a shocker... he appointed a woman to run the National Park system a few years ago because she knew what she was doing. She didn't say we couldn't log dead trees of federal land. She refused to allow lightening caused fires to just burn themselves out (as her predecessors from the Clinton era had, causing billions of dollars in unnecessary damage). Anyone who has lived in the mountains knows that fires go through underbrush and dead trees. There are people all over California and Northern Nevada who can tell you what happens when "environmentalists" like Gore forbid clearing the dead growth and underbrush from their property. They lost their homes to Gore's stupid notions.

When it comes to drilling in ANWAR, Ruby, the size of the drilling area would be miniscule, like a postage stamp. New technology would allow the operation to work effectively with almost no disturbance to the land. All the dire threats made over the pipeline came to nothing, but it's politically correct to forget that, isn't it?

Go tell someone who cares.

i think the thing with Gore is that he doesnt really give up any of his creature comforts to reduce his footprint, hes still flying around in planes and air-conditioning his home, and putting the fairy lights on at xmas time etc

but really i think thats part of his message, that if everybody was a bit smarter we could stretch the resources we have for longer, he really appeals to the middle and upper classes who are just producing insane amounts of CO2 with their lifestyles

he might be a hypocrite, he might have unreliable data, but i think the good thing about him is that he has gotten people to stop and think about it . . . maybe it will prompt a few more people to investigate for themselves?

even people that dont believe in global warming surely must see that overflowing landfills and unrenewable energy sources are going to make this planet a very uncomfortable place to live if we dont stop being selfish and take a bit of responsibility for ourselves

My family has always been conscious of things like wasting energy, littering, minimizing our garbage, growing our own vegetables, and generally behaving responsibly. Gore is only out for himself and what he can get. Using lies and political intimidation are the wrong ways to go about raising awareness. He should be ashamed of all the deceptions he has committed and all the people he has fooled into believing his trash. The possible good that has come from his ravings can't outweigh the insanity.

hi S.L.
i think rural and working class people generally tend to act more responsibly towards waste as they are motivated by their own hip pockets . . . unfortunately it seems that the more money people have the less sense they seem to use and there are still people eating out of styrofoam containers for every meal and buying an new mobile and computer and home entertainment setup every month . . . how many times do you see yuppies on talkshows that have never even heard of energy saving light bulbs or using ceiling fans instead of aircon? some people are really out of touch with reality . . . perhaps they needed someone insane that they could relate to so they would listen to thing the rest of us have all known for years?

There may be more people paying attention now only because of him, true, Morgan. But the new rules and laws being imposed on us are not going to help the environment or the economy. We just had a new tax go before congress. It was called the Gore Tax and would have raised our gas prices an extra $1.40 a gallon for nothing! The excuse for not developing our own oil is that it will damage the environment. Same excuse for not building new refineries or even nuclear power plants. Too many people are buying into the ridiculous (and expensive) scare tactics. It seems to be those who can afford to waste who jump onboard with all the new rules. And they can just pay for "carbon credits" so they don't have to deal with it, anyway!

Last time I take a weekend off...

fog, I think Perez Hilton had to actually change his last name in order not to get sued or something, I think he TOTALLY loves being compared to Paris, he is the guy poking fun at them all but really wants to be one of them. He even has his own clothing line now and hosts segments on TV.

Hey ruby,

I also found it a little odd, and was surprised to read the story now, I remember reading a LONG time ago that he had made a lot of Ecco friendly changes to his house, I guess its a context thing, he probably bought a new house or something, we all know the media loves to spin a warped version of a truth.

S.L. in these words we can all find common ground, it is my personal philosophy (and you will see in historical posts i have had issues with the money side of all this) is that is doesn't matter why, or how we get there, the important thing is the planet comes first. One thing Gore has done is get a lot more people on board.
