who left the lights on?

department of climate change

I can't quite believe the poor Climate Change Department is still getting a kicking for the earth hour oversight. We are all human, someone left the lights on, so what?

In fact by writing this snippet I am potentially perpetuating the story but I just wanted to stick up for them, they were probably all still in there working putting together the Green Paper or something. I know its politics but surely after this amount of time Mitch Fifield has something better to do than this,

Mr Nakkan could not say whose offices were affected, prompting Liberal senator Mitch Fifield to query whether Senator Wong was trying to escape blame.

''I'm just wondering whether Senator Wong, who understandably as the Minister for Climate Change would be acutely embarrassed to have her office illuminated during Earth Hour, whether she is trying to blame the department for something which was within the control of her office or, if as you say, there was a malfunction of some sort,'' he said.

''We'd all like to see the Climate Change Minister practise what she preaches ... I don't want to be in any way, shape or form cynical, but it would seem to be extremely convenient for the ministers concerned that there was a malfunction affecting their suites on the night of Earth Hour.'' AAP

I hate getting political but he needs to pull his head in and worry about more important things. Earth Hour was two months ago, apologies have been made, MOVE ON!!!! For the record I would never call myself a Labor supporter, the closest I get is by voting green but if anyone is putting their money where their mouth is, its Senator Wong and the newly formed Climate Change department. The job they have undertaken is MASSIVE and they seem to be the hardest working politicians in Canberra from where I sit.

death by 1000 cuts

May 21st 2008 00:06
or should i say, $8,000 cuts.

I deliberated long and hard before writing this post. I do think the new government has great intentions of helping the environment, and they probably didn't think through the consequences of this budget initiative, unfortunately, the consequences are proving to be devastating for our fledgling solar industry. This is not intended to be a sledge, just a post to raise awareness, so possibly an error can be corrected.

In the recent Budget the government introduced a means test for the $8,000 subsidy for houses installing solar panels, people who earn an income of over $100,000 are now no longer eligible, sounds reasonable, the rich don't need subsidies. What they didn't realize was that a HUGE percentage of the people who could actually afford the extra money required to install solar panels over and above the subsidy, $13,000 to give a rough number, were people earning over 100k, NOW THESE PEOPLE ARE CANCELLING their orders en masse. You see most people who earn that also have a mortgage and big bills to pay, they still need subsidies on really big ticket items such as this. Here is a snippet of the what was built and is now being decimated
A solar system which will take care of about 50% of the typical household consumption still costs $13 000 after the rebate, and 80% of the purchasers of grid-connect solar power systems in the last 12 month were households earning over $ 100 000. So the $8000 rebate allowed the industry to go through a mini boom, with a number of positive outcomes.
Firstly the price of systems came down by more than 10% over the past 12 months, because manufacturer discounts increased as buying volumes increased, and in order to stimulate business and because of a competitive market, the industry passed these saving on. Secondly a reliable network of solar installers started to spread across the continent, stimulating small business and creating the vital infrastructure in the field of local renewable energy, which Australia will need - should we be at all serious about tackling climate change. Thirdly, the purchasers of solar power systems started to monitor the use of their own electricity consumption, which in households over $100 000, with large fridges and plasma TVs can only be a good thing.

These people aren't whingeing or crying poor me, they just can't pay the extra, especially given interest rates and fuel, helping the planet has become a "luxury" they can no longer afford.

If only the solar industry had as much money as the companies that destroy the planet, so they could head off to Canberra and pay the lobbyists millions to fix this, somehow I don't think this can happen. What a shame, hopefully its not the death of an industry.

bloggers rave, scientists prove

May 20th 2008 04:23
Let's make no mistake, I am a fan, but i am not a fan of this. Yesterday at a conference Tm Flannery revealed Climate Change is far worse than he thought a few years ago and we might ave to resort to desperate measures, not so bad right? Well think again, those desperate measures are, amongst other ideas, to put Sulphur of all things into the stratosphere to encourage something called "global dimming" , fine to have an idea and endorse it, but the next bit is the scary thing, coming from a man of science
He conceded there were risks to global dimming via sulphur.

Well it is happening, the first shareholder revolt against a corporation's Climate Change policy or in Exxon's case, lack thereof.

I am sure we are all in the same boat, with Petrol prices reaching the stratosphere and forecast for MORE increases coming out of broking houses (Goldman Sachs say it could get as high as $200, yikes), we want an Emissions Trading Scheme but we are scared about how much petrol prices will increase. Lets face it the lobbyists are already doing a great job to spook us into thinking our lifestyles are about to go out the window in order to do something about Climate Change.

Well I was at a conference yesterday and finally got the truth about how much Petrol prices will increase at a $30/ tonne price for carbon (that is approximately where it will trade here

Greenpeace has released an excellent in depth report on why carbon Capture and Storage will not save the Climate.

The link to the full report is HERE It is worth reading just the first few pages to familiarize yourself with the issue as it is going to be hotly debated over the next few years

spending the future

May 12th 2008 00:04
Talk that the Environment is going to be looked after in tomorrows Federal Budget to the tune of $2.3bn is clearly a gift for the Environment, whether it is repackaging of some prior pledges or not, it is certainly a nice number.
It would be an even nicer number if the government pooled it all together and started a green energy corporation that managed this money and kept it working as a going concern like a Telstra but a massive Green Energy corporation. Instead of giving grants they could hire or re-hire the smart people that have or will be forced to leave Australia to get their inventions commercialised overseas. sounds like a grand plan I know, but with a long term investment horizon, and Governments should be long term, this $2.3billion could turn into a massive asset for Australia and be a MAJOR exporter of Technology and know how, the sum of the parts would certainly be greater than the whole. And yes in case you were wondering, i do find it very frustrating to see the N.S.W government selling power assets, right at the time we should be investing more into power for the long term.
Just think about this, and this is the tip of the ice-berg to what this company could achieve, instead of loaning people money to put water tanks or Solar panels on their houses the Government could just do it and earn the income from power back to the grid and the differential on the cost savings from the water

Very far according to an assesment by a company called CLIMATE COUNTS, CLICK HERE, a not for profit organisation dedicated to fighting Climate Change. They survey all major American companies annually to assess their contribution towards the climate change solution and environmental awareness. Overall the Tech industry ranked the best of all US industries.

To give you an idea of how they all fared IBM was the best with a score of 77 out of a possible 100, APPLE SCORED a MEASLEY 11. I am ashamed to be writing my post on a Mac to be honest. The problem they had is described as follows from this article CLICK HERE or

Apparently there is a damning survey out there saying that despite the fact most Australian people see Climate Change as the largest issue our country faces, most of us are unwilling to change our lives.

Look there is no doubt we are consumerism crazy, but I think most people are willing to give up a bit for the environment. So I think I am going to have to step in and defend us a little bit and say that I think some of the criteria are a little unfair:judging us, for example in terms of the length of commute we have, we can't help it if our cities are spread out and the accommodation is far away. Fair go people. Many of us sacrifice luxury and catch hideous public transport to work, and I think ALL of us would just about kill to be allowed to work from home a few days a week and not commute at all

I spend therefore I am

This post might seem slightly off the topic of climate change, however if you consider that excessive consumption is one of the main contributors to environmental damage and climate change, it isn't that far from the mark.

I watched a disturbing television program last night on consumers and debt. The TV host had a room full of people who were up to their eyeballs in debts, she interviewed each one on just how they got into debt

the end of the platinum age?

May 6th 2008 07:19
It seems the job of following Climate Change issues is becoming a doom and gloom reporter.

Ross Garnaut, the man commissioned by the government to provide advice on the design of Australia's emissions trading system, has released a paper in the Australian National University's biannual Asian-Pacific Economic Literature stating that failure to act on Climate Change, OR a poor policy response will result in an economic disaster equivalent to the great depression. Yes that's pretty depressing people. Especially considering Garnaut has no time for offsets. In my humble opinion a credible offset system revolving around renewable energy creation is essential for Australia and the world to fight Climate Change, as it provides the financial rewards needed for the renewable energy technologies to flourish and develop enough to achieve grid parity pricing. (It is worth noting a feed in tariff would be just as good

More doom and gloom scenario's about Climate Change are soon to be coming out of the CSIRO, according to this article CLICK HERE

I am all for publicising Climate Change awareness as you all know, but I understand we get the message that Climate Change is bad and its effects are potentially catastrophic and i have no desire to harp on, but over the next few weeks the lobbyists are going to try to convince us to give away the pollution permits to big business so they can legally continue on their merry way, instead of taking some ownership for their contribution towards Climate Change, they will try and tell us the COSTS OF THE SCHEME are devastating, we need to remember the costs of not acting are potentially more devastating
