Climate Red - April 2008

I like this

April 30th 2008 05:28
Feeling overwhelmed that little old you just can't make a difference in the battle for the environment and climate change.

Well a leading environmentalist has made a great analogy in London recently that I thought I would share.
Oxford University professor Norman Myers has a message that might help you square your shoulders and face the future. (Click on the quote to get to full story.)

"If you feel you are too small to make a difference then you haven't been in bed with a mosquito," Myers said.

In other words, Myers told a meeting in London on climate change, individual actions really can make a cumulative difference to cutting the carbon emissions that drive climate change just like the tiny mosquito which can keep everyone in the house awake with its ceaseless whine.

Next time I feel overwhelmed ill think renegade mosquito and ATTACK!!!

cheers

fat bottom lines

April 29th 2008 04:31
The design of the Emissions trading scheme in Australia is going to be one of the most heavily lobbied issues in the history of this country, and I don't think I am exaggerating. There is a lot at stake.

Today we see the beginnings of what is going to be a never ending barrage of complaints from lobby groups. What is at stake? Well if you believe the front page of the Financial Review this morning companies will have to spend about $7billion upgrading systems to comply with reporting requirements. i can't prove whether or not this figure is right or wrong, what I can do is point out the agenda these companies have; they want the government to issue emissions permits to them for free, estimates are that permits could be worth up to about $10billion a year, free permits would give all the regulated companies a MASSIVE windfall, which arguably will not be passed on to the consumer who will definitely be paying a higher price for their energy.

I wonder how much money they are all going to waste on lobbyists? I am pretty sure from what I know an upgrade to their existing computer software would be cheaper!!! Considering measuring emissions is a function of energy use, it really isn't that hard, yes if you have supply chain concerns it gets a bit messier but it is not that big a deal in the scheme of running a multi-billion dollar coprporation. (I have calculated a lot of carbon footprints so I do know a bit)

I will try and make this the last thing I say on this issue, here is a link to the type of story you will see more and more of in the press over the next few years. Make no mistake people all that is at stake here is these companies enhancing their already fat bottom lines.
CLICK HERE FOR FULL TEXT and check out the front page of the Financial Review and make a mental not to put these people right up there with Tobacco lobbyists in the credibility race.
Lobby Group Concerned Carbon Trading To Hit Australian LNG

April 28, 2008: 08:11 PM EST

MELBOURNE -(Dow Jones)- Australia's biggest oil and gas lobby group Tuesday voiced fears that Australia's planned carbon trading scheme could hurt liquefied natural gas, or LNG, exports, adding to concerns stated by producers Woodside Petroleum Ltd. (WPL.AU) and Chevron Corp. (CVX).

"While ever Australian emissions-intensive industries are exposed to competition from countries that do not have Kyoto emissions reduction obligations, it is incumbent upon an Australian emissions trading scheme to incorporate a design feature that prevents the undermining of the viability of those industries," Belinda Robinson, Chief Executive of the Australian Petroleum & Exploration Association, or APPEA, said in a statement.

a new word

April 26th 2008 00:45
Our dictionary of new and obscure terms relating to Climate Change, global warming, carbon trading and the like is getting very colourful indeed. Now we have a new addition.

Geo-engineering. The definition of this (and I may well write a longer post on this fascinated as I am) from good old Wiki is
Geoengineering is the deliberate modification of Earth's environment on a large scale "to suit human needs and promote habitability". [2] Others define it more narrowly as focusing only on the mineralogy and hydrology of the Earth.[3] The term geoengineering is distinct from accidental anthropogenic climate change.

No I am not making this up, last week there was an entire conference on the subject, with all sorts of weird and wonderful inventions on display that will counteract Climate Change in some way shape or form. Unfortunately most of the solutions have unintended consequences of catastrophic proportions, but hey, never let the truth get it in the way of a good theory!!!!

Here is a snippet from and article on the conference and a link as well as a link to the conference listing with definitions all the weird and wonderful ideas out there.

Sometimes there are no words for the new words.

cheers

Louie

When it comes to averting dangerous climate change, an awful lot of people seem to hold out hope that we can blast our way out of the mess we’re in. Nothing so boring as energy conservation, or even replacing coal, oil and natural gas with solar, wind and nuclear: Instead, let’s shoot sulfate particles into the atmosphere to reflect away sunlight! Let’s load up the oceans with iron so plankton will grow like dandelions on my lawn and suck up the heat-trapping carbon dioxide produced when we burn fossil fuels!

Hope springs eternal. This week brought a conference on weather modification, with the emphasis on getting clouds to drop their raindrops. My favorite paper was, alas, withdrawn: it proposed a machine—a ship, actually, with “four torpedo-shaped hulls”—that would “stop hurricanes from wrecking large parts of America.”

ten fold and then some

April 24th 2008 01:13
A new report has been released saying that spending on renewable energy research needs to go up ten-fold if we are going to be able to cope with climate change, this would still only put the spending on par with spending on the US Apollo space program project.

It's actually a pretty interesting piece, stating we should be preparing for the worst case scenarios of Climate Change and if that doesn't eventuate we have no downside because we desperately need to spend money on developing renewables and other clean technologies anyhow

underwonderwaterworld

I had a brilliant dive on Hayman Island last week while I was there for a wedding, had to hide from the rain somehow, due to the rain the Viz wasn't as good as some of the dives I have been on but there were aspects of the dive that made it one of my best ever.

The water was shallow so it was the longest dive I have ever had, plus it was just me and the Dive Master, as any diver would attest to, crowds are a big downer at some of the best dive sites in the world

earth day - its my Birthday

April 21st 2008 23:46
So today is Earth Day, besides being my Birthday what does Earth Day mean?

Well Earth Day is actually two days, one held on the Spring Equinox run by the United Nations, the other held on April 22 each year started in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson. Both days are an observance and protest to create and promote environmental awareness. April 22 now signifies the Birthday of the modern environmental movement

oops I did it again.....

April 13th 2008 23:40
I try to be good, have as little impact as possible. with the compact in mind, I made my weekly Saturday trip to the Supermarket, fully focussed on buying essentials only, the less packaging the better, I get all the way around the Grocery store and low and behold, I forgot my green bags AGAIN!!!! So over I go and buy more, when i got home and looked at my stash of Green Bags I thought to myself, am I really helping the environment by using these things? They certainly don't look very good for the environment, in fact they almost look worse than plastic bags, so I decided I'd do a bit of checking.

Are we being brainwashed into thinking these green bags are better than plastic, or are they genuinely good? I am sure I am not the only person who has about 100 of them now, have I really helped

national geographic human footprint

For those of you with pay TV (I am afraid I don't have it) there is an excellent program airing in Australia this Sunday night on the National Geographic channel, it is a show on the Human Footprint and it analyses all our activities to assess the impact our actions have on the earth

this is good news

April 11th 2008 04:18
China and Australia have agreed to work closely together on Climate Change.

Considering the future of Kyoto is largely, if not entirely dependent, on China, India and the rest of the developing world reaching agreement with the developed, this is a great way for Australia to show leadership on the Climate Change issue

the compact

April 11th 2008 01:21
I am not sure if I could actually go all the way with this BUT I LOVE THE CONCEPT, Lilla, this post is for you.

A colleague of mine just told me about an interesting agreement called "the compact" it is effectively all about reducing your consumption in order to reduce your individual impact on the Earth

to pact or not to pact?

April 8th 2008 00:00
As part of his European tour, Kevin Rudd has agreed to be part of an Emissions Trading pact between the UK and some European heavy weights. This is great for our image, and shows we have commttment to Climate Change solutions. However, we do need to remember that we are only circa 1.5% of global emmissions and as much as we want to be part of the solution, exposing our trading system to the bigger systems too early, will do more harm than good in the immediate future. LINK TO ARTICLE ON THE PACT

Those that follow markets will know just how easy it is for markets to be marginalised if they are irrelevant and Australia does not want to do that. Australia needs to make itself relevant

where we stand on Climate Change

April 6th 2008 22:22
Just so we all have it straight this is the governments latest stance on Clmate Change. Clear as mud you will agree. The HE is our fearless leader.

He said: "There has to be a greater synergy between, let's call it our policy leadership in this, which has been focused so much, legitimately, on targets and global architecture, almost reverse-engineered back to the means by which you can quickly deliver outcomes, and on the demand side in our economy we're looking at potential advances in terms of 20 to 25% range if you do this across the board. It all takes cost, but let me tell you it's probably the quickest lever you can pull given the challenges we face."

glacier melting

April 5th 2008 02:43
I thought this time lapse footage of a glacier melting was very cool, so I thought I would share.

Mind you what is not so good is the fact that it is melting in the first place, but we are all pretty much on the page of doing something about Climate Change, no matter how small so I wil leave it alone, especially because it is Saturday, a day to relax and loo at cool pics and not do much else

jellyback

April 3rd 2008 22:15
Well I
UN Climate talks Bangkok
am confused. Kevin Rudd, the left hand, is running around Europe pledging Australia as the missing link in solving climate change, and at the crucial UN talks in Bangkok our delegation, the right hand, has jellybacked and appears to be shooting for "aspirational" targets, which we all know is jellyback talk for doing; de nada.

Now I was under the impression that delegations were supposed to reflect the views of the government, so where do we stand? Read this article in the Australian for a rather negative view on what the delegation using our countires name is up to in Bangkok
