The Prisoners Dilemma

September 28th 2007 07:01
Does the prisoners dilemma apply to Climate Change?

Well that is the question being asked in this EXCELLENT article from the Economist CLICK HERE FOR FULL TRANSCRIPT

Basically the Prisoners Dilema exists when two prisoners are hypothetically locked in separate cells and cannot communicate with each other. They are both offered deals to rat out the other, if they both stay quiet they each get a 1 year sentence, if they both rat then they both get 5 years, if one rat's and the other stays quiet, one walks the other does 10 years. You get the idea. Click here to learn more from Wiki on the Prisoners Dilemma

This article is basically highlighting that we all benefit from a better planet but some countries will just sit around and watch everyone else clean up their mess and quite happily reap the rewards. I am more optimistic than the author but it is worth a read just to get a perspective on how vital these Current UN Negotiations are and just what is at stake.

George W's famous conference is on as we speak, will be interesting to see how many wheels get reinvented at that one.

Here's hoping for all our sakes the US, China and India sort out their differences and come to the party in November, there are many many ways they can reach comprimise, heres hoping they do.

Happy Friday Orblers

P.S. Here are some more links to some other great articles i have found, it is pretty much information overload in Climate Change World with all the conferences going on, for the most part there is a lot of hot air being created for not much good so far.......

As the Waters Rise, good balanced look at the Current Global situation at the UN conference

YoThe WWF is about to release a pretty daming report that reeks of Politics to me, worth a read and I may do a post on the Report when I get my hands on a copy

Phone Book Karma......Typical

September 26th 2007 09:16
So a few of you read my little rant about the Phone Books and how redundant they are, and what a waste of time and money and waste of Trees, well I have to retract my View ONLY SLGHTLY mind you...I still think they should be asked for not given automatically but maybe they aren't as redundant as i thought...oops

Let me tell you a story...I am right down to the very end of a long and Gruelling license application involving ASIC, a 450 page submission, lots of lawyers and fees and time and money and am sweating it...It was supposed to be lodged today. We get to the 11th hour and lo and behold the highly paid lawyer who has siphoned the better part of my life savings FORGOT one crucial Document, this document has to be procured from London of all places, BUT not to worry in Lieu of i can get a stat dec signed by a Justice of the Peace and this will save the day....So start looking for a JP in all the usual places, Chemist, Post Office, Bank, Police Station, each one of them sent me to the other until I had done laps of every neighbouring Suburb and then some and WASTED Valuable time. Before this happened I had thought I'd have free time and had planned to drop by my Sisters house, so i call to cance - no lame excuse this time - I tell her my drama - then she says no worries ill jst look one up in the phone book for you......... yes you can guess the rest....

My day was saved by the White Pages.........here is a link to a good post where this image is attached toAnother No Phone Book Campaign

Bad Bad Louie for saying something mean about the White Pages........ I will still campaign on the Automatic send out, my Sis could have just as easily googled the info.....

Cheers

Louie

P.S. Some interesting Climate Change times ahead with conferences left, right and centre but a lot of its is boring so far sol I'll filter. One thing I have noticed is that it isn't true that we dont have a vote in the UN talks if we havent signed Kyoto, seems that is a bit of an political Urban myth,,,,now why would they want to mislead us? Oh Yeah there is an election coming up .......click here if you want to read more

Recently I came home to find two big fat thumping phone books sitting on my doorstep. Now call me old fashioned but surely in this day and age there is no need for good trees to die in vain and phone books be delivered to every house in Australia.

I am guessing this is the wrong audience to preach to as I would say it has been a long time since anyone here actually touched a phone book (other like me to put it in the recycling)

Let's face it the days of the phone book have long since passed. It is quicker, easier and better for the environment to search for everything online, phone numbers are no exception.

With all the noise around about Climate Change and concern for the environment it is time practices like this were abolished. Look i am not saying do away with the phone book altogether i am sure there are households without computers and they need the phone book but surely someone should ask if you want it. Instead of just dumping unwanted dead trees on people's doorsteps.....its a bit frustrating watching all these corporations and people jumping on every bandwagon to be "climate friendly" buying Carbon Credits etc wouldn't it be nice if they applied some common sense to the equation as well. Prevention is still better than a cure...I guess it doesn't make as good headlines.

Now i don't know exactly how many tonnes of paper creating these phone books adds up to but here are a few facts about paper production and environmental impact I found on the Web

Paper manufacturing is the third largest user of fossil fuels worldwide and the single largest industrial use of water per kg of finished product.

The production of one ton of paper consumes the same amount of energy as one ton of steel.

30% of all trees logged in the US are intended for the paper industry.

Approximately 5% of the resources used to produce paper are contained in the final product, the other 95% are discarded during the production process

B&W toner contains at least 6 different substances that are listed as hazardous and toxic.

Now for something that doesn't get used it seems such a shocking waste, even if it is recycled surely those of us with computers can do without......

I have a friend that is a senior manager at Telstra and I will be calling her to see if we can try to do something about this.

Happy Sunday

a Bargain?

September 17th 2007 23:43
HUGE Investment is needed to combat Climate change according to the latest UN report......see below: this article shows the world needs to chip in a humble $200bln yes I said BILLION to combat Climate change. Thats a lot of money in any man's language, oh yeah except of course if you think of it in terms of how much we spend on like WAR and WEAPONS, that's a TRILLION number........here's hoping governments take the lead and contribute at least a percentage of this $200bln number, with OUR tax money.

It sounds like a lot of money but i guess if we consider the stakes $200bln is A BARGAIN

here here, some good news

September 14th 2007 06:46
A few weeks ago this Blog had a little rant about rich people flying around in Private Jets and whether they should be offsetting their emissions given they are causing a great deal more pollution than us mere mortals...well the Worlds richest man listened to us....!!!! (ok well maybe not but hey)....... Warren Buffet who owns his own FLEET of private jets that get leased out to the gazillionaires has made it compulsory for them to pay for offsets and they simply will be billed ever year...here here......

Story is below

We now officially have the solution to Climate Change......get on the phone to Johnny, Peter Garret, Mr Bush and anyone who'll listen...forget Kyoto, Carbon trading markets, Emissions targets and changing light bulbs.
NO MORE GLOBAL WARMING......the solution is before our very eyes....EAT LESS MEAT yes that's right...according to the Associate Press article below if we eat less meat then we can reduce the number of Livestock on the planet who will fart less so the world will produce less methane....too easy (I am going to overlook the fact that if we don't kill them to eat them then there will be no obvious predator and livestock numbers will explode just this once for the sake of a good story)

Seems like a while since the Greenies have had, well anything to say on climate change but maybe that is because I have sworn myself off Politics so I have ignored all rhetoric.....now both the Canadian Greens and the Australian Greens are speaking out against APEC stating the efforts of the APEC leaders in discussing Climate Change at last weekends conference have undermined the United Nations Conference in November. Why you may ask? Well it seems because they can......

Well all those who have been holding their breath for a Climate Change solution to be presented at APEC, Johnny hasn't let you down. As we speak we are on the verge of having a non-binding tentative agreement to first reduce Carbon emissions and then miraculously reverse Climate Change altogether. Now don't get me wrong, I would welcome any real progress but what the hell does a tentative, non-binding agreement mean?

The cynic in me which I so desperately try to suppress says it is a great way of grabbing a headline to please 86% of the population coming into an election but really doesn't mean much at all. To our credit we have at least acknowledged that the UN is the Forum for formal Climate Change discussions in November but that hasn't stopped us claiming all sorts of victories as a Nation on Climate Change diplomacy; anyone who has been following the issue knows we are ashamedly behind the 8 ball

I came accross an interesting new report on Coal (ok well probably only interesting if you are into that type of thing and Def not as interesting as Celebrities) on the WWF Website. They have analysed: Coal Demand growth, the pollution it causes, its impact on Global Warming and what lies ahead for the future for Coal if we want to Save the Planet.

Fortunately there is hope for Coal yet...... We just need to halve our consumption of it and improve the technologies we employ to clean it up
