Climate Red - News and Views on Climate Change Issues.

Climate Red - August 2007

According to Reuters* Malaysian Trade Minister Rafidah Aziz CLICK HERE FOR LINKhas criticised the APEC Climate Change agenda stating that ourselves and the US don't have the credentials to host such discussions given we haven't signed the Kyoto agreement.....this could hurt aearances if it gains momentum......and

I think she may have a point.

She states if we want to talk about climate Change we should do so at the UN Forum in December with the rest of the world. I guess from an outsiders point of view it looks like we are simply trying to push our own agenda onto the rest of the Asian community and blatantly disregard the Global Kyoto agreement. It will be interesting to see how far discussions progress or if other Asian leaders follow the lead of this bold approach and stick it to John Howard and George Bush.

Rightly or wrongly we are not part of Kyoto therefore cannot be a leader in the Global Climate Change debate. Johnny might be better off eating some humble pie and asking another Asian leader who is part of Kyoto to head the Climate change debate and draw up the agenda. That would be if he really cares about Climate Change and having a constructive debate in the APEC forum. It would be easy for a cynic to think he may just want Climate Change headlines and doesn't really care for an outcome. It could be very easy for that same cynic to think Johnny thinks the 86% of us who care about Climate Change won't read the fine print re discussions and be won over by a few headlines.

cheers Louie

I found this Fortune Mag Article more than slightly disturbing CLICK HERE

Planting trees in Uganda to offset greenhouse-gas emissions in Europe seemed like a good idea - until farmers were evicted from their land to make room for a forest.

Basically a Carbon project was developed to benefit a Dutch not for Profit organisation formed by Dutch Power companies. The intention was to plant trees in the Forest Perimeter of the Mt Elgon National Park in Uganda so the Face Foundation could receive Carbon Credits then on-sell them to Carbon sinners. All seems pretty simple and standard except for the fact that Ugandan Farmers inhabited the area and lived off the land. Fortunately they have been granted an injunction to move back onto their land but it does beg the question of how far we should go to produce these Carbon credits, I mean isn't the whole point to create a better future for the planet, should a first world Charity be allowed to endanger the livlihoods of Third World farmers just to develop a Carbon Sink?

Seems like a very murky Grey area to me. if the company planting the trees was a for-profit organisation I am sure the alarm bells would have rung much sooner.

I am not saying we don't need to stop poor farming practises that are causing a lot of damage and are a big part of the problem but we can't just go around erasing peoples livlihoods and stop them from accessing their homes. It seems to be taking things a bit far. Life is hard enough in third world countries without us imposing our "new-age" philosophies on them.

I guess it all comes back to how successfully we have all been convinced this is the biggest issue facing our generation. I dont know what everyone else thinks but I think, yes we should all be aware of Climate Change so we can do our bit but we certainly shouldn't be programmed to accept behaviour we previously would have found inhumane. Any change needs to be within reason and fair to all parties involved, this process requires balance....SURELY......anyhow I thought a few others might be as disturbed as me, the article is worth a read.

cheers

Louie

By now we are all well versed on Global Warming, Climate Change, Green Energy and the rest. We are all doing our best to reduce Global Warming in our own small way by reducing our own individual Carbon Footprints. If you look at this Climate Change campaign from a "marketing" perspective it has probably been one of the most successful Global marketing campaigns in the history of the World, all for a good cause. Let's hope so. Hopefully we are all not being set up to accept a lower standard than previously under the guise of "Global Warming".

Some serious questions are now going to be asked of us, an article I read this morning claimed 86% of Australians think that Climate Change is an important issue for the upcoming Federal election. CLICK HERE Apparently a LOT of us care about what is going on.

Well people we better know what we think about Nuclear power because the wheels are in motion for it to be put forward as the answer to all our Global Warming Problems. On paper nuclear seems like the perfect solution, if you ignore the risks of course. This article in the Times states that despite Environmentalists objections Britain is going to receive two new nuclear power plants and most Britains think (yes 86% again) tink its ok because its a solution to climate Change....hmmmmmmmmCLiCK HERE Scary to think of the risks if we try to solve this entire problem with Nuclear Power.

The Greenpeace Website is a good place to start if you want to get the lowdown on Nuclear Power, here is a snippet

Nuclear power is still as radioactive, dangerous and expensive as ever. And it is no solution to climate change.
Our best solution to climate change is clean renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, combined with technologies that vastly improve energy efficiency.

To solve the climate crisis, Greenpeace is calling for a target of 60 per cent renewable energy in Australia by 2050.

Read our submission to the federal government's nuclear inquiry.

CLICK HERE to check out everything Greenpeace has to say on Nuclear Energy

In my opinion it seems the risks and costs far outweigh the benefits of Nuclear power, something tells me we are all being set up to believe it is the answer to all of this but it isn't. Better to be informed instead of being TOLD half truths. I for one will be saying NO to Nuke.

OK ok I know Monday's sucking is pretty much a given but do they have to be this bad.

Yesterday I was booked on an 8.20am flight to Sydney after spending a weekend with friends on the Gold Coast, as you may or may not know Qantas no longer fly's out of the Gold Coast you have to either go to Brisbane or Fly JetStar....soI rock up to the counter at 7am (I am always early for flight check-ins) and the girl at the counter tells me the flight has been cancelled....it take a few seconds for my mind to digest this information still being in my pre-coffee haze, then I hear her say (by now she has turned into a Dragon in my mind, a big green fire breathing Harry Potter dragon) you didn't leave a contact no. to call you on. Yes I did I say, its compulsory on the online booking form...oh she says oh that's right we did call you but you didn't answer........by now I am getting pissed, so I said look it is pretty academic at this point anyhow I am here; I didn't know you called so what are we going to do (at this stage i was still the only one at the counter) well she says we have a bus for you to go to Brisbane and you can fly out of Brisbane at 12.15.....yes folks five hours later....no I say that doesn't sound very cool, what flights are available here you have flights going all day don't you? They are full she says except 1.15, cool I say I'll take that, my friends just live 10 minutes away

There is an interesting article in today's WSJ that really got me thinking. By now we are all getting the hang of the routine: work out your Carbon Emissions and buy Carbon Credits to offset your emissions with the ultimate goal being to completely wipe out your personal Carbon Footprint.

This is all well and good but if you take a look at the Stats there is a direct relationship between wealth and Carbon Emissions. The richer you are the more you pollute

This months Wired Mag has a great article spelling out just how Carbon Funds are going to help the Environment -Carbon Funds invest in the Carbon Projects that provide the Carbon Credits that all the offset providers are selling to you when you want to reduce your Carbon Footprint...simple yeah!!!!!!

Basically these guys just went to Borneo and bought a tract of land and raised a COOL $200mill to pay for it. They will then register the Credits and sell them to one of the providers. We as the consumer will buy credits from an Offset Provider or simply the middleman. Obviously in reality it is a little more complcated than that but it is an excellent article to get a feel for just what we can do for the environment once the "smart money" starts investing in these markets

Freezing their Butts and other bits off 600 swedish troopers climbed up a melting Glacier for Photographer Spencer Tunick and Greenpeace on the Weekend to raise awareness for Global Warming.
I'll have to say this makes some other attempts at raising Global warming awareness look rather feeble. When I first saw this article I was afraid for how cold their feet would have been, then I discovered in other shots they lay FACE DOWN in groups....OUCH OUCH OUCH....

Another Carbon Offset Warning

August 15th 2007 04:01
Carbon offsetting is getting "cooler" but as has been discussed here previously one of the biggest concerns about available Carbon Credits is the Quality of the Credits you are buying, this weeks Economist (my finance bible) has an excellent article on the different Voluntary Carbon offset systems. The story wades through the quagmire of different systems out there pretty efficiently. This will be a big help those who want to buy Carbon Credits or for those who just want to understand more about the Credits themselves.

adelaide GETS climate change

August 12th 2007 23:51
Adelaide is opening its very own Climate change centre today based at Adelaide Uni. You will be pleased to know they have their priorities completely in order and will be examining the effects of Climate change on Wine Growing (among other things of course)
It is good to see us Aussies have our priorities right when allocating resources to serious world issues. Let's face it, most things we can live without but threaten our supply of wine and beer and we just won't cope. We would quite happily let Tasmania flood and can turn a blind eye to the odd drought or two, but take away the Beer and you've got a fight on your hands.

Well it has been a pretty rough week for Climate Change believers with people even doubting the very weather data that Al gore's entire argument is based on. It is very hard to know from the sidelines whether this is the classic Tall Poppy syndome taking effect on a Global scale or if we really have been lied to. It escaped my attention due to a busy week that Al gore actually spoke out against the Climate change Hoaxers on Tuesday in Singapore, he didn't mince his words either. This little battle could get quite nasty if the gloves come off that is for sure.

Al Gore is saying that the Climate change Hoaxers are running an anti-climate change campaign financed by Polluters!!!! He compared it to the campaigns run by the Tobacco companies

I am not sure whether to laugh or Cry, or maybe this is a really good idea.......This guy is suggesting that all individuals get a Carbon credit Card and we have an annual allowance, to help the environment and help our health!!!!!!! on the premise that to reduce Carbon Emissions is to excercise more......The Carbon Cure for Obesity.....By Stealth.

Worth a read if for no other reason than it is Friday afternoon and who knows something crazy like this could really happen, especially in an election year, where Politicians are fighting to be the Carbon Reduction innovator, wheel re-inventers

It can be argued that Climate Change is the biggest issue facing our Generation. If Climate Change is the biggest issue facing our Generation it can be argued that the biggest problem we need to solve is..... Should developing countires be allowed different rules? i.e. Should Developed Countires foot the Bill?

Cate Blanchett was in qld yesterday to capmpaign for Climate Change and launch the new Australian Conservation Faoundation's campaign CLICK HERE to tell them you CARECLICK HERE You go online and register and answer a few questions and if you can be bothered send a pre-typed letter to your MP. I usually don't do this kind of stuff but have made an exception for a good cause this time, especially because they didn't ask for money........

I can be a bit cynical about the agenda of B grade celebrities jumping on the Climate Change bandwagon and the money to be made BUT I think in this case we can safely say Cate genuinely cares, she is Definitiely A list and ...........good on her for getting out there and not campaigning from some cushy studio somewhere. Here is the snippet. I am going to visit the link and give them some support

I guess its no surprise that Bush's recent invitation to the World's largest polluters has been greeted with audible eye rolling from the Greenies and Silent Groans from heads of State. Let's hope this is a spark in the right direction and not the beginning of the end for Global agreement on Climate Change.

The Greenies are frustrated as are the Heads of state that of course the moment Mr Bush wants to get on board the Green boat it has to be his boat, forget perfectly good upcoming global forums for discussion; APEC in September and the UN Conference in November; it has to be George W's idea and has to be in his sand pit

Think outside the Bottle?

August 1st 2007 23:36
I guess we have all seen this brewing in me for the last few days, and I am hoping this will be my last post about water. I read an Article in the Economist yesterday; the economist is my staple, trustworthy magazine that represents the last bastion of capitalism, and even they have joined the bandwagon and are giving the think outside the bottle campaign airtime.

Here is the link to the Think outside the Bottle Capmpaign

Forget about the downside to Global Warming, the dead Coral, the Droughts, the floods, the hurricanes, extinct animals - THERE IS GOOD NEWS - Tasmania e will become a major wine growing region.
Halt the Kyoto treaty and run down and buy all the land you can get, Tasmania is going to be the new epicentre of Australian Wine Growing, sorry all you Wine growers heavily invested elsewhere, the scientists have a different idea for your future!!!!
