Climate Red - July 2007

Pure Genius, these guys have linked the warming of the earth to the Sun. Now correct me if I am wrong but it is pretty bloody obvious that the sun warms the Earth. The cynic in me says these guys are trying to jump onto AL Gore and CLimate Hoaxers Gravy train... - or maybe its true, global warming is all to do with the rotation of the sun and a few sunspots. If it is true for their sakes they better get some bloody good PR and make an Oscar winning Documentary straight away. At the very least they need to get a minimum of a B grade celelbrity on the band wagon. - anyhow in fairness, read their theories for yourself, I couldn't really glean much from the evidence other than well, the sun is warm and warms us up and climate patterns go in cycles....STILL

Maybe I need a climate change holiday.

A team of water experts says the pattern of droughts and floods in South Africa shows our global warming was triggered by the variability of the sun's irradiance rather than by human-emitted CO2. They say variations in South African rainfall patterns are keyed to periodic reversals of the sun's magnetic field—and to the constantly changing distance between the sun and the earth as both move through space.

In South Africa, alternate 11-year sunspot cycles produce opposite rainfall results. One complete "double sun cycle" occurs every 20.8 years: the "first" cycle brings a big flood, followed by a small drought; the next brings a big drought, followed by a small flood.

Lead author Will Alexander used the double sunspot cycle to publicly predict the end of major South African droughts in both 1995 and 2006. He notes that South African droughts have often been broken at 11-year intervals by severe floods associated with sunspot maxima—as in 1822, 1841, 1863, 1874 and 1885. The research summary appears in the June 2007 issue of the Journal of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering.

The South Africans' conclusion is reinforced by Dr. Robert Baker of Australia, who told a recent meeting of the International Geographical Union that he has found the same 21-year cycle in Australian drought and rainfall. Baker says "the sun is like a musical instrument, vibrating in complex patterns," with all of the planets moving in similar relationships.

H. N. Bhalme and D. A. Mooley published similar conclusions about India's floods and droughts in the Journal of Applied Meteorology, September, 1981, based on an Indian flood index compiled from 1891 to 1979. They reported that "a highly significant 22-year cycle in the flood area index was nearly in phase with the 22-year double sunspot cycle." Bhalme and Mooley also noted that the western U.S. has a similar relationship with the double sunspot cycle and severe flooding.

Clearly, what these water experts are all describing is a global climate connection with the sun.

The number of sunspots on the sun, and their intensity, varies in a cycle averaging 11 years. The distance between the sun and the earth keeps changing slightly and predictably because 1) they move on slightly varying paths through space; and 2) both bodies accelerate and decelerate constantly depending on the combined gravitational forces of the other big planets.

These factors apparently produce the moderate 1,500-year climate cycle on earth, which was discovered in the Greenland ice cores in 1980s and has since also been found globally in seabed and lake sediments, fossil pollen, tree rings and peat bogs.

Earth's recent global warming occurred too early—before 1940—to be blamed on human CO2 emissions. The net global warming since 1940 is only 0.2 degrees C, with none at all since 1998. There's little correlation between the earth's recent temperatures and CO2 levels, but a strong correlation between the sunspot index and subsequent changes in our sea-surface temperatures.

The 1,500-year climate cycle shifts temperatures about 2 degrees C above and then 2 degrees C below the long-term average at the latitude of Washington and Paris, with greater temperature changes near the poles. Temperatures change little near the equator, but rainfall patterns can change greatly; for example, 5,000 years ago the Sahara was wet enough for grazing and hunting, while Kenya was very dry.

The UN climate change panel has declared the solar variations "too small" to produce the climate warming of the past 30 years. However, a recent Danish experiment showed that the solar variations may be amplified fourfold because they create significant changes in the earth's cloud cover. More clouds cool the earth by deflecting more of the sun's heat back into outer space.

The evidence for a sun/climate connection keeps pouring in, while all we hear from the Kyoto crowd is "The computer models agree with each other."

I would like to start off by saying YOU HEARD it here first, by that I mean Lilla's article of the vagaries of Bottled Water a few months back CLICK HERE has finally hit the main stream media and Bottled water is taking a hammering.

I am afraid I have to play the Devil's advocate here and stick up for the old bottled water industry a little bit. Not all of it, just parts where the media is creating some hype that is a tad unfair, and I would like to offer a conspiracy theory of my own on this topic.

Firstly, Why just bottled water people? Why not all PET users in general? bottled water is not the only user of PET. I can't find the exact data or rather I can't pay $3,330 to the PET Association to get it, but all you need to do is look in the Fridge at your local service station to see that there are many other users of PET materials out there. I am sure many of the bottles that end up on the side of the road did not only contain water. Also many many other packaging materials we all use daily are made of PET not just bottles.

As for sayting that bottled water is the cause of Pollution, well it isn't the bottles that don't dispose of themselves properly it is US who act ireesponsibly and don't dispose of them thoughtfully

I can hear you screaming but what about the water they take from the Aquifer's? Well statistically (and I can only speak for Australia) bottled water is only circa 0.5% of the water consumed from ground source in this country, the biggest offenders are companies that make just about everything else you can think of INLCUDING ALL THE OTHER SOFT DRINKS WE CONSUME AND SHOCK HORROR ALCOHOL. Most bottled water manufactutuers respect the Water tables because that is where they make their bread and butter, they are the last people who want to see our water supply damaged and depleted. IN SAYING THIS there are a lot of multi-national Beverage Companies that have moved into the bottled water space and yes they do terirble things like buying vast quantities of water from license holders for next to nothing and bottle it for huge mark ups but that isn't the tiny water producer. I think you will find most small manufactuuers of Bottled water would prefer not to produce their product in PET containers and have done this to compete.

How do I know this you may ask. WELL I have a friend who has a small water label here in OZ. Lilla's article did disturb me enough to have a conversation with them about packaging and they listened and agreed with all the negative points about PET. So we have been looking around for new packaging. The results are pretty disturbing, there are very few packaging solutions available and none we could find in Australia that are unequivocally better, they all have their drawbacks and faults where the environment is concerned. The choices are a container that creates far less waste, uses less fuel to manufacture and transport so creates overall a smaller carbon footprint BUT the materials it is made from are less Enviro friendly than PET because globally it isn't economical to set up recycling plants because of its lack of popularity. Then you have Glass which is well publicised for its Enviromental faults. So they have three choices of packaging, PET, Glass and the Softpacks.
What do you chose? well if you are trying to survive in business and compte then you have to use PET. They are going to do an experimanetal Soft Pack run and see if they can attract demand; so maybe if enough people look out for it and get behind it then it could catch on and we can all do something about the PET problem.

Now I can hear you saying, we don't need bottled water at all. Well I guess you can argue that; but no-one can deny the harmful trace chemicals that turn up in tap water, it can be as clean as you like at the Source but the pipes and the way it gets to us means it is pretty much a lucky dip as to the quality of water you are drinking in your house, most filters simply cannot remove these harmful chemicals.Especially poisons such as Arsenic that do turn up in Tap water analysis. Plus everyone should have the choice as to the source of the water they consume. Bottled water is such a huge phenomenom because so many of us choose to drink at least part of our daily intake from a pure source. Water arguably is the most important food we consume; to maintain health you need to drink large quantities. Take me for example I drink a mixture but if I were to drink 100% tap water I would be concerned for my health. Yes the water is OK but my body can only take so much of the added surprises we get in Tap water. A good test to do yourself is to take a supplement with your water and measure its effects in different water: Tap v Bottled. If the supplement has less impacts on your body with Tap Water it is because it is using some or all of its potency equalising the negative impacts of the impure water, if there is no difference, you have great pipes so go for it. Then for a laugh do it with a big commercial water v your local fmaily run water spring business, you'll notice a big difference there too.

So before you get too nasty about bottled water. Think about the individual Brand, and what YOU plan on doing with your PET bottle. It is a disgrace so few get recycled, but the more we demand it the more recyling capacity they will have ot provide.

The whole point of this "carbon footprint" exercise is so that environmentally conscious companies that want to reverse the damage their products have on the environment have a vehicle to pay the environment back for their wrong doing, if no other practical alternative is available for their product. Health regulations are very strict and the alternatives aren't that great. so chosses a brand that cares about recycling, Carbon Offsetting and giving something back........... If you really want to worry about all this there are very few industries that come out unscathed, therefore very few prodcuts we can use. You may think this is fine but health regulations mean that we would all have to become farmers again just to eat.

My conspiracy theory is that multinational Water companies are trying to put the little guys out of business so they can buy out all the small water springs, own all the water licenses and SCREW us over even more, ALSO they can kill two birds with one stone by murdering PET as a product and greenmailing governments into allocating them huge amounts of Carbon offset credits worth Billions for doing factory upgrades they would have had to pay for themselves to change the packaging they are using. That my friends is how you wrought the new Carbon Credit system (Ill write more on this later)

Anyhow, these are just my thoughts and I am prepared to be crucified, but it really is bothering me that they are only picking on bottled water and not the whole lot of them.

P.S a Big thanks to Lilla for her post on Enviro Warrior and getting people thinking.

Reading about Climate change is one thing, digesting all the info on the potential for Climate change being a hoax is cool too: We are all entitled to our opinion....and yes we have disucssed the fact that Scientists are now the new Black and are considered cool for even mentioning the Words Climate and change in the same sentence but we have to draw the line somewhere.....before they all turn into Paris Hiltons on us....

The Article below has pushed my buttons. I think we can save the speculation about living conditions in 2070 to science fiction novels and the next George Orwell, not serious attempts at journalism...people please!!!! and before you say it, I know where the article was published BUT I picked it up off a global newswire......

I mean it is scary but even the CSIRO can't know this for a fact AND...WE GET THE POINT, Climate Change is a problem, no need to go this far.

Welcome to 2070 - it's not a pretty sight

25.07.2007
By DOMINIC FEAIN

THE Northern Rivers landscape will be unrecognisable in 2070 if the extreme climate change predictions outlined in a new CSIRO report come true, according to a local ecologist.

There will be no beaches as we know them now and no rainforests ... existing wetlands will be devastated and substantial areas of residential land will have to be abandoned, Mark Graham, from Wetland Care Australia, warned.

In fact, the whole agricultural industry will have to be rethought sugar cane, tea trees, macadamias and coffee will struggle to survive in a region with drastically reduced rainfall and soaring temperatures not to mention rising coastal salinity.

And (this report) doesnt consider other factors like the increasing global use of fossil fuels and deforestation were doing everything wrong.

The report, released yesterday by the NSW Governments Department of Environment and Climate Change, predicts possible temperature increases on the Northern Rivers of up to 6.4 degrees Celsius, and potential rainfall reductions of 40 per cent by 2070 effectively giving our region the climate of Cairns or Port Moresby but without the rain. Byron Bays rainfall would become similar to that of Casino.

The reduction in rainfall will be accompanied by an increase in extreme rainfall events, resulting in more flash flooding and erosion.

Coastal residents can expect to be hit hard by extreme winds and storm surges which, in conjunction with rising sea levels, could mean theyre forced out of their homes if they live too close to the beach.

The report indicates it will be difficult to predict which areas will be worst affected, stating that the actual magnitude of beach erosion will vary significantly from one location to another.

The report also suggests architects and planners need to consider climate change so that buildings will be able to withstand the increased thermal and structural pressures of the 21st Century.

Our personal health is also expected to be affected warmer winters are expected to reduce the incidence of cold-related illnesses, though the risk of heat-related illnesses will increase.

Water quality is expected to fall dramatically due to lower stream flows and higher temperatures, creating a more favourable environment for algal blooms. Rising sea levels and increased salt-water infiltration will also exacerbate groundwater salinity levels. This will particularly affect irrigated agriculture, including dairying and horticulture.

The predicted higher temperatures will also affect farm productivity. Increased heat stress on dairy cattle will reduce milk production and the reduced winter chilling of some fruit trees will result in lower yields and crop quality.

On a more positive note, the rising carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is likely to increase plant growth, though farmers will need to plan now for the climatic changes.

The farmers of NSW have developed useful adaptation skills that stand them in good stead, the report noted.

Below is an article penned by Peter Garret he makes a few relevant points about the Oppostition position on illegal logging and the relevance to Climate change. Sounds like he is gaining his voice now we are all over the Bono joint smoking thing - which elevated him in my humble opinion - .. Tthat's not really why I wrote this blog;
I started reading the article like most because the Title caught my eye, while I was reading it I found it to be very biased and very one sided, so much so that I did something I rarely do mid-read. I double checked to see who wrote it, sure enough it was Peter Garret himself: It just got me thinking about the press and journalists and whether it is very cool for politicians to write their own press pieces.......I know its been going on for ages and incidentally this article was a rebuttal from a piece published the prior day which I did not read but sounded equally biased and full of crap in elements..... It did make me think what the hell are journalists going to do if all the politicians in this country start writing their own articles??? And how the hell are we supposed to filter all the crap that gets thrown at us???
For the record, I am pretty Party neutral on the whole Climatechange issue, they both have GLARING faults in my view, but how is a person who doesn't follow issues closely or know the names of the right people supposed to know what to believe if the press just allows Politicians to write their own articles? I kinda think the whole point of the press is to filter information and give us balanced views in what we read, but that is just me. We live in a country with Freedom's which I appreciate and love, I'll just have to watch how I interpret what I read because let's face it I really only know the names of about 5 politicians, maybe six if I really tried, so how the hell will i know what I am reading!!! Especially coming into an election

Yes Al Gore is worth $100m, that is a huge increase from the filings made during the 2000 election Campaign where he was worth between $1-$2m, that is a MASSIVE increase in any man's language and wouldn't you know it a lot of it comes from investing in Climate Change coys or coys that benefit from the CLimate change issue via an investment coy he part owns......yes he does have cushy high paid jobs at Google and Microsoft and gets six figures nearly every time he speaks but he also has an investment coy that invests in coys that benefit from the Climate change issue......this is all according to an excellent article on Click HERE

I am not saying I think ththe fact he is profiting from all this is bad - hell we all need to make a living and with only $1mill in the bank life musta been tough back in 2000 - it is just that, well...... the cynic in me suspected this was the case, we will all still cheer when he get's his Nobel Prize and the Oscar can still be his but it just might give the Climate Change Hoax beleivers a LOT of ammo at Dinner parties when they are bagging Al gore's efforts to bring world attention to Climate change

Never in my life can I remember when being a Scientist or a Meteorologist was cool....has
Live Earth changed that? Is it now COOL to be a scientist....will people now find it interesting if you sit around spouting facts about the evolution of planetary temperatures, the experiments conducted on how to measure carbo emissions or the physics of rain....will you invite a guy to a dinner party specifically because he knows all about weather patterns, what causes them and whether or not it is going to snow this season......if live earth made rock stars environmentalists, meterologists and scientists on the weekend does this now mean that Environmentalists, scientists and Meterologists are the new rock stars?????? The evidence is building up to suggest the winds of change are blowing.......

I heard an interview with Cate Blanchett (possibly one of the cooloest people going around) the other day and she cited David Suzuki and Al Gore as her two heroes...is the world doing a complete back flip, who would have thought a a Scientist, and a politician could be admired around the world by seriously cool people

The Climate change Hoaxers have been out in force to bag the Live earth concerts for not being Green enough....and to re-iterate their point that Climate chang eis a Hoax....who cares whether Climate change exists or not honestly? ......the fact that so many people believe in it has done one great thing, it is making us all aware of the Environment and that we need to take care of it...even if Global Warming didn't exist (that is not my stance) the positives of awareness moving towards the Environment and Environmantal causes at unprecedented levels is a good thing, no matter which way you want to spin it....

In some ways you can kind of see the point to the objections: Wastefull, jetsetting rock stars who probably have more lightbulbs in their kitchens than most of us have in our entire houses.....getting up on stage and preaching to all of us, telling us how to reduce our measley emissions, while at the same time sucking up millions of vaults of power and creating tonnes and tonnes of waste...but lets get some perspective here people...

As you would expect pockets of Climate Change Hoax believers are criticising the Live Earth concerts for being hypoctritical and questioning their green credentials.

They beleive that the 8 concerts around the world featuring over 150 Artists will cause more damage than good. Organisers have stressed they are employing every environmentally friendly tactic possible to ensure that the Good of the message far outweighs the damage to the environment caused by the event itself. The concerts will employ a miriad of guidelines to ensure a low impact some of the guidelines are as follows: all electricity that powers the shows will be from renewable sources; concessionaires will be encouraged to use suppliers of biodegradable plastics; waste will be minimized through recycling and reuse; venue offices will use as little energy as possible; production lighting will include the use of LED light bulbs; staff and artist air travel will be offset through carbon credits; and ground travel will be by hybrid or high-efficiency vehicles where possible

Its all our fault…yes all us Orblers glued to our computer screens all day......demand for high tech devices is now getting the blame for Climate Change. Reports are showing that many new devices actually chew more power than the old devices we are replacing them with AND the fact that we are all using high tech devices more frequently is a main contributor to increased power usage, hence Climate change, not to mention the fact that most of them get made in countries that are yet to care about emissions reductions…….A lot of the increase is due to the fact that we leave these appliances on ….for example our new Plasma screens with set top boxes, well a lot don’t have automatic off switches so effectively we are leaving the
m on all the time…the report I was reading stated that by 2010 in developed countries household technology will contribute to 45% of domestic power use…..seems like a pretty huge figure to me……

I guess it comes down to what we have said all along, we all must remember to do our bit and just thinking about what we do, turning a few power points off every time we think of it can make a big contribution to the reduction of Global warming
